The heads of several major broadband ISPs and consumer groups , including TalkTalk , BT , The Open Rights Group , Consumer Focus , Which? and Orange UK , have united to publish an open letter that opposes the government’s recent proposal to disconnect Internet users that are "suspected" of involvement with illegal downloads.

Broadband ISP ICUK has launched a new range of light user packages starting at only £10 inc.VAT per month (option 6), which includes download speeds of 'up to' 8Mbps (0.8Mbps upload), a short 1 month contract, 2GB monthly usage allowance, impressive 20:1 contention ratio and is available from 900+ UK telephone exchanges. Prices increase up to £20 per month for a 20GB usage allowance.

Until 16th October 2009, Be Broadband ( O2 ) are offering their superfast broadband on a shorter 9 month contract option. The promotion is designed to target students returning to university, although anybody can sign-up. The offer only applies to the ISPs 'Pro' and 'Unlimited' packages.

BT Wholesale has announced the introduction of its long awaited Wholesale Broadband Managed Connect (WBMC) over IPstream Connect product, which is part of the operators next-gen 21st Century Network ( 21CN ) platform. The move is crucial for many BT based UK ISPs because it will make it easier and potentially less costly to run 'up to' 24Mbps ( ADSL2+ ) and future fibre optic ( FTTC , FTTP ) based broadband services.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has once again cut the monthly price of its trend setting XXL 'up to' 50Mbps cable broadband service (1.5Mbps upload). The standalone service is now just £33 per month for the first 3 months and £38 thereafter. If you bundle phone line rental for +£11 a month then the price drops to just £18 per month for the first 3 months and £28 thereafter. Free installation on both.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld two complaints made by BT against a circular advert for TalkTalks UK ISP home phone and broadband (Essentials) package. The promotion compared the TalkTalk service to a similar set of options from BT, but failed to offer a completely correct comparison.

UK ISP Be Broadband has today announced a new partnership with Geeks-on-Wheels that will see BE’s members provided with on-site IT support. The service can be used to solve IT problems from clearing PCs of viruses or spyware, data recovery for hard disk crashes, to hardware and software configuration.

Network operator Entanet UK has warned that the current methods being used to track and identify illegal broadband ISP file sharers ( IP tracking ) are "unfair and inadequate" because they are a flawed means of identification for individuals. Instead the provider is recommending a total re-think of how digital rights are managed and controlled by the entertainment industry.

The results from 527 respondents to our latest monthly survey reveal that 41.3% claim an "Average" level of satisfaction with their broadband ISP and 35.4% were "Very" satisfied, while only 23.1% expressed a "Deep Dissatisfaction" with their current provider. The overall level of satisfaction appears to be quite strong, yet consumers clearly still see a number of areas with room for improvement, such as speed.

Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for August 2009. It shows that the average UK broadband download speed for the largest 10 ISPs has increased by a tiny amount from 4.262Mbps in July to 4.331Mbps in August.

Customers of O2 UK could be at risk after one of the ISPs users claimed to have discovered a serious security vulnerability in the operators home broadband routers. The issue, which allows remote attackers to access a home users private network and view/change settings on the router, allegedly affects both the O2 Wireless Box II and III.
