Popular broadband ISP O2 UK ( Be Broadband ) has topped yet another customer satisfaction award, this time it's the 2009 PC Advisor Broadband Survey. O2 may have been overall winner but there were also three runners up out of 14 providers tested: Be Broadband ( owned by O2 ), PlusNet and Zen Internet .

The price of Vivaciti's broadband 'LLU Unlimited' package, which offers download speeds of up to 24Mbps (1Mbps upload) and “unlimited” access, will soon be cut from £21.85 inc. VAT per month to just £19.99. The change will come into force from 1st November, though it is not the only change the UK ISP has planned.

Insiders working for two of the world’s biggest record labels, EMI and Sony Music, have raised fears over plans by Virgin Media and Universal Music to launch an "unlimited" broadband music download service before Christmas. The labels are worried that the service is fundamentally flawed and could threaten other online music outlets by cannibalising their sales.

ISP Be Broadband ( O2 ) has teamed up with Transversal, a provider of Dynamic Knowledge Management solutions, to improve its website based customer service quality with a new self-service system. The setup makes it easier to identify questions posted on the site and get them resolved. Over 21,400 people have accessed the system in the first four weeks, viewing 58,585 questions.

The Broadband Forum has released its latest global broadband and IPTV (Internet TV) statistics for Q2-2009, which was sourced from Point Topic data. The data shows that broadband lines grew by 12.9m during Q2, which brought the global total to 445m. The second quarter was slower than Q1, which by comparison added an additional 16.6m lines.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint made by BT against a TV advert for Sky Broadband (BSkyB). Sky's advert compared its older 8Mbps package bundle, which included line rental and a free talk calls plan, with BT's Total Broadband Option 2 package.

Popular ISP Zen Internet has quietly joined the UK Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a self-regulation body that works with UK broadband providers to block websites containing child abuse or serious racial hatred content. The move came as a surprise because Zen has historically aired "concerns over [THE IWFs] effectiveness".

T3 Magazine reports that BT is opening two high street shops that allow people to drop in and see a demonstration of the operator’s broadband services. The first store will open in Whitchurch near Cardiff this week and the second in Muswell Hill next week.

The latest June 2009 'FTTH Council Europe' statistics for Fibre to the Home (FTTH) fibre optic broadband connections show that the service has grown by 18% since the last report in December 2008. FTTH is where a 100Mbps+ fibre optic cable is connected directly to the home, though you won't see the UK on this list.

The UK divisions of mobile operators T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) and Orange (France Telecom) have entered into exclusive negotiations that will result in a new 50:50 joint venture company. It could also disrupt the debate over freeing up 900Mhz (2G) radio spectrum for use by 3G ( HSPA ) and future 4G ( LTE ) Mobile Broadband services.

The Scottish Labour Party has called for FREE wireless ( Wi-Fi ) broadband services to be made available on all public trains and buses in Scotland. The party hopes the move will form part of the presiding government’s new plans to encourage 'greener' transportation alternatives to the car. Indeed the government itself appears to have a similar idea.

Ofcom has released its latest quarterly (Q1-2009) Telecommunications Market Data Tables (Download .PDF), which includes a breakdown of total small business and residential broadband connections. At the end of Q1 2009 there were 17,557,000 residential and small business UK broadband connections, an increase of 1.6% on Q4 2008, which breaks down as follows.

Leaked Home Office documents have revealed how this year’s Queens Speech will contain details of a serious crackdown on UK broadband ISPs, specifically those that have failed to tackle online child abuse websites. The government is expected to make blocking such content a mandatory requirement and could fine or even criminalise an ISP for failing to tackle the problem.

The latest uSwitch.com study has estimated that more than 8.1 million UK broadband customers (47%) do not know their download limits and could be at risk of exceeding the ISPs Fair Usage Policy (FUP); up from 7.5m in 2008. This is important because 39% of broadband users believe they are on a completely "unlimited" package, which is often incorrect and follows deeply misleading marketing practices.

The BBC Radio 4 show More or Less has revealed serious inaccuracies in the UK governments claim that 7m Brits have been involved in illegal online file sharing (P2P) activity. The show traced the research back through several government and analyst organisations until it found the real source - a privately commissioned Jupiter Research study by Mark Mulligan for the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a music trade body.

Customers of broadband ISP O2 UK can finally rest easy after the operator confirmed that a fix had been created for the serious security Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) flaw that we first reported earlier this week (here). The issue is known to affect both the O2 Wireless Box II and III (Thomson TG585 and TG585n) router modems.

The latest forecast from technology and media specialist Coda Research Consultancy (CRC) has found that portable laptop and netbook users accessing the Internet via Mobile Broadband will consume 1.3 Exabyte’s of video content per month by 2017 - a sixty fold increase over 2009.
