Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for December 2009. It shows that the average UK broadband download speed for the largest ten ISPs has increased slightly since November (4.367Mbps) and currently stands at 4.478Mbps.

This follows on from our recent 'Top Tips for Improving MobileBroadband Performance' article, which suggested a number of D.I.Y (Do It Yourself) solutions for getting more speed and reliability out of a 3G Mobile Broadband connection. Now somebody has found something even simpler, just stick your USB Modem (Dongle) in the middle of a Saucepan!

It's been revealed that homes built with metal wiring (Chicken Wire) inside old plaster walls exist at almost perfectly the right wavelength of a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (802.11) wireless broadband network signal. The problem is that such wire makes setting up a Wi-Fi network (both internal or one received externally), extremely difficult because the walls would simply absorb its signal.

Dorset County Council is hoping to use the 2012 Olympic Games, which will see key sailing events being held in Weymouth and Portland (National Sailing Academy), to leapfrog other parts of the country by getting superfast next generation broadband services deployed sooner.

Wireless operator BT Openzone, which runs 4,000 public Wi-Fi Hotspots around the UK, recently revealed that it had seen traffic on its service double during 2009 and they expect more of the same in 2010. Recently Freerunner, the free wireless broadband initiative, also predicted that the country's 10,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots could rise to approximately 30,000 by 2012.

Council leaders from around the UK have joined with the Local Government Association (LGA) to propose that the planned minimum universal UK broadband speed target of 2Mbps by 2012 be turned from a "commitment" (USC) into a legally required "obligation" (USO). This would effectively force the government, operators and ISPs to guarantee the availability of 2Mbps to everybody, which is distinctly tougher than a breakable commitment.

UK ISP Be Broadband has revamped its up to 8Mbps budget BE Value package by reducing the price from £13.50 inc. VAT per month to just £7.50 as standard; this follows the success of its recent "half price" promotion. In addition the package now offers a 40GB (GigaByte) monthly download allowance instead of its old "unlimited" one.

The Managing Director (MD) of UK BT Business, Nigel Stagg, has spoken of his belief that businesses in Wales will have a better 2010 than 2009/8, thanks to faster Internet connections. Stagg remarks that this improvement will come from the operators rollout of 21st Century Network (21CN) technology alongside its newer ‘up to’ 24Mbps ADSL2+ and superfast 40Mbps fibre optic ( FTTC ) broadband products.
