Broadband provider TalkTalk ( AOL , Tiscali etc.) is offering new customers a staggering 12 months of FREE broadband and phone (line rental) service when they subscribe to a lengthy new 24 month contract (returning to £18.48 per month thereafter). There is also a one-off connection fee of £29.99 to pay.

Sam Filipov, a member of the 60K International Contact Centre (Bulgaria) support team used by ISP Be Broadband UK, has been awarded a Gold Medal for Best Customer Service Agent at the ContactCenterWorld.com Awards; held in Las Vegas at the start of this month.

Customers of UK ISP Vispa Internet have been complaining, since approximately 11am this morning, about a raft of connectivity and support problems plaguing the provider. It's understood that many cannot connect and others have experienced extremely slow speeds. Meanwhile Vispa's website has been somewhat unstable and their support lines appear to be out of action too.

The UK Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has criticised Government plans to provide £1bn of investment (from the controversial fixed telephone line tax) into Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband as "[falling] short" because its target of 90% coverage will still leave a significant 10% excluded.

WeFi, a free wireless Wi-Fi broadband Hotspot locator website with a database of 47,000,000 access points around the world, has revealed that 40% of Hotspots in the USA are unlocked and do not require a security password. This compares with 25% in Europe.

We don't often cover new broadband networking hardware but the newly announced D-Link Touch DIR-865 at CES 2010 probably deserves a quick plug because of its included 3 inch Touchscreen, which is useful for both setting up and managing the device (as opposed to typing in your gateway IP address via a website browser).

The Fibrecity ISP ( H2O Networks , i3 Group ), which is currently busy rolling out new 100Mbps FTTH fibre optic broadband services via underground sewers in UK cities (e.g. Dundee and Bournemouth), has called for all future next generation broadband access (NGA) services to adopt an open infrastructure approach.

The UK governments Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has launched a new consultation on how proceeds from the Next Generation Fund (NGF), which proposes to put a 50p +vat per month tax on all fixed phone lines to help fund the rollout of next generation broadband services to 90% of the country by 2017, should be spent.

It is official. From today the ISP formerly known as Tiscali UK is no more and has been fully rebranded to TalkTalk . The inevitable move follows May 2009’s £236m Tiscali acquisition by The Carphone Warehouse , which already owns TalkTalk , AOL and Opal. The combined ISP group is currently home to approximately 4.12m broadband subscribers.

It's easy to forget, what with all the fuss over illegal music downloading among broadband ISP customers, that legal Internet alternatives have been exhibiting a consistent pattern of growth. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a trade association for the British record industry, has revealed that sales of music singles rose by 32.7% (total 152 million) during 2009 with 98% of those coming from downloads.

Skype, the popular Internet voice (Voice-over-IP) communications provider, has launched a new beta (4.2) version of is Microsoft Windows client that includes support for HD (High Definition) video calling. Unfortunately many UK broadband ISP connections will be unable to cope with the "sustained 1Mbps symmetrical bandwidth" recommended for its use.

UK ISP XILO has extended its FREE broadband activation and migration offer on their C&W based unbundled ( LLU ) Pro 16 H and Pro 16 O (16Mbps) products until 31st March 2010. Sadly the promotion has not been extended for XILO's BT based and Pro 24 packages.

It reveals that Pre Pay Mobile Broadband will become the norm for the majority of users to access the Internet worldwide, with a third of a Billion users by the end of 2013.

BT has just released a new list of 63 local UK telephone exchange locations where its new superfast (up to 100Mbps) fibre optic based broadband services ( FTTC , FTTH / P ) will become available from. The move is part of BT's £1.5bn programme to deliver next generation services into 10 million homes (40% coverage) by 2012.

ISP Be Broadband has privately hinted to its customers that the providers long awaited 44Mbps (download) bonded broadband service could launch sometime this month. The service, which bonds/links two ADSL2+ (up to 24Mbps) based unbundled ( LLU ) broadband lines together, will also offer a peak upload rate of 5Mbps and cost around £50 to £55 per month.
