The Broadband Forum has revealed that were 466.95 million broadband customers in the world at the end of 2009, which is up from 451 Million in Q3-2009. This represents a healthy annual growth of 14.21%, with the strongest rise coming from Q4-2009. Point Topic recently estimated that the world could top 740 Million by 2014.

A global survey commissioned by Nokia Siemens Networks has unsurprisingly revealed that Mobile Broadband users are 22% less satisfied with their service than fixed line broadband users. The results come on a day when Ericsson, the mobile equipment manufacturer, has revealed that global mobile data traffic, across all networks, exceeded the volume of voice calls for the first time.

The Carphone Warehouse and broadband ISP TalkTalk UK have cleared the last hurdle in their long demerger process after the High Court of Justice in England and Wales gave formal legal approval for the split earlier this week.

Panda Security has released its latest analysis of internet SPAM between January and February 2010. It reveals that the United Kingdom (UK) is responsible for churning out 2.34% of the worlds junk email, ranking us 12th place overall. Brazil (13.76%), India (10.98%) and Vietnam (5.71%) head the table.

The UK Governments Chancellor of the Exchequer and Labour MP for Edinburgh South West, Alistair Darling, has unsurprisingly confirmed plans to help fund the rollout of next generation fibre optic based broadband services by putting a new 50p +vat per month tax on all fixed phone lines in the country.

The Open Rights Group (ORG) claims that "hundreds" of activists are expected in front of Parliament today to protest against Government plans to cut people's internet (ISP) connections and allow website blocking. Protesters are to be gagged or blindfolded symbolising disconnection and censorship that will become law if the Digital Economy Bill (DEB) is passed by Parliament.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK suffered a serious broadband, TV and phone service outage yesterday in Leeds (West Yorkshire) after dumb thieves ripped a large section of the operators fibre optic cable out of the ground assuming it was made of valuable copper.

The CMA (part of BCS), a membership organisation for ICT professionals, has joined the many other voices in raising concerns that what the Digital Economy Bill (DEB) promises to deliver could be the death knell for public access Wi-Fi Hotspots in the likes of coffee shops, pubs, clubs and hotels across the UK.

The boss of Clear Mobitel, a fixed line operator, has hinted that it could introduce a super-fast 4G Mobile Broadband service on the island of Guernsey, but only if the Office of Utility Regulation allows it.

UK based BT informs us that its 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+ and 21st Century Network ( 21CN ) based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) product, which should be available to more than 16 million UK homes and businesses by winter 2010, has just connected its 1 millionth end-user.

Market regulator Ofcom has today opened a new consultation on measures that should help to encourage the rollout of "super-fast" next generation broadband services across the UK. The move includes a proposal requiring BT to offer ISPs access to its underground cable ducts and overhead telegraph poles. It also proposes a Local Loop Unbundling ( LLU ) style process for BT's own fibre optic infrastructure.

From time to time some UK broadband ISPs can block, often by accident due to proxy server changes and URL (website address) filter settings, popular file hosting sites like Rapidshare. Both BT Retail and BSkyB / Easynet ( UKOnline , Sky Broadband etc.) have had problems with this in the recent past, though it can occur sporadically on other ISPs too.

The UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has today pledged to make "super-fast" broadband services available to every home by 2020. The move goes one step further than Labour's first target of reaching 90% of the country with a "next generation broadband" network by 2017, which Brown calls "the electricity of the digital age".

Mobile operator O2 has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the launch of its new Home Phone (voice and line rental) services and related broadband bundles have been delayed until "later in the spring". The products were originally announced in January 2010 and targetted to be made available from March (i.e. early spring) of the same year.

The government has appointed a career civil servant with no apparent IT (Information Technology) experience to be its Head of Broadband Policy and Programmes at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The post will be manned by Simon Towler whom does at least hold a PhD in molecular biology, which is nice.

Broadband and hosting provider Zen Internet has announced the appointment of Richard Ahern as its new Head of Customer Operations. Immediately prior to joining Zen, Richard worked for the Department for Work and Pensions as a Contact Centre Specialist across a complex multi-site operation.

The Open Rights Group (ORG) informs us that 10,000 UK citizens have written to MPs in less than three days to demand a debate on the controversial Digital Economy Bill (DEB). The DEB seeks to combat internet copyright infringement (downloading of illegal music etc.) but its proposed solutions, such as website blocking and broadband ISP disconnection for "suspected" abusers, have caused serious concern.

European Satellite operator Eutelsat has announced the completion of a key communications module for its forthcoming KA-SAT broadband internet satellite. The development will allow KA-SAT's Tooway service, which is expected to launch by the end of this year, to offer improved download speeds of 'up to' 10Mbps to rural parts of the UK.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has rejigged its Mobile Broadband and included Netbook computer bundles. Prices start from £25 per month for a 1GB Mobile Broadband package and either a Samsung N130 or Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Netbook (24 month contract). The price rises to £30 if you want a bigger 3GB usage allowance.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has revealed that its future 200Mbps broadband (DOCSIS 3) service trials will be showcased as part of this years Ideal Home Show event in Earls Court London (20th March - 5th April). The move follows news last month that VM had expanded its 200Mbps trials (here).
