Thousands of BT based telephone and broadband lines in Kent have been cut-off after criminals cut and stole six crucial copper cables on Wednesday last week. It is the second time that such a theft has occurred in the area, a similar incident took place during September last year.

Broadband supplier Entanet UK, which delivers services to several vISPs around the country, has announced its active involvement in trials of both the BT fibre optic 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises ( FTTP ) and existing copper line ADSL2+ Annex M (faster 2.5Mbps upload speed) based internet access services.

Skype, a popular internet voice service, has retaliated over calls by some "very large telecom companies" to charge bandwidth-intensive services for the privilege of running data over their Mobile Broadband networks. The move, which goes against net neutrality, could result in other sites and services like Spotify, YouTube or possibly even Facebook falling into the same trap.

Internet Search Engine and advertising giant Google is in hot water, again, this time for using their Street View cars to map peoples home Wi-Fi wireless networks. The controversial practice was discovered by Germany's "horrified" Federal Data Protection Commissioner, Peter Schaar.

The 2010 uSwitch broadband customer satisfaction report has rated O2 the overall winner after it came top in 10 out of 11 categories, with 92% of its customers being satisfied! Rival broadband ISPs PlusNet and Sky Broadband were runners-up in 2nd (87%) and 3rd (86%) place respectively.

The European Internet Service Providers Association (EuroISPA), which represents over 1700 EU ISPs including the UK ISPA, has warned that the recently published Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) would introduce measures that will leave ISPs with "no alternative other than to monitor the internet traffic of consumers" for unlawful copyright file sharing.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has announced the deployment of TOA Technologies' Software-as-a Service (SaaS) mobile workforce management solution to over 1000 field engineers responsible for home repairs. The new system will offer better visibility and more accurate scheduling, thus hopefully cutting down the time it takes for engineers to arrive and fix any problems.

Mobile operator T-Mobile has come top in a test of roaming UK Mobile Broadband performance and also managed to achieve an average download speed of 1.9Mbps. The Broadband Genie 2010 Road Trip saw USB Modems (Dongles) from six mobile providers ( O2 , Orange , Three (3) , T-Mobile , Virgin Media and Vodafone UK) taken out of their safety zone and simultaneously tested throughout a two-day 350 mile rail trip.

Alcatel-Lucent's research arm, Bell Labs, has achieved a broadband DSL download speed of 300Mbps at distances of up to 400 meters (or 100Mbps at 1km) over existing copper line infrastructure. Most of BT's telephone and broadband ISP network in the UK is still copper line based, where at present the best speeds available only go up to 40Mbps ( FTTC / VDSL2 ).

Akamai has released its latest global 'State of the Internet (Q4-2009)' report to the fourth quarter of last year. It reveals that the UK continues to do poorly in the global league table of fixed line broadband ISP download speeds with a national average of just 3706Kbps (3.7Mbps). At least that's an increase from 3.5Mbps in Q3-2009 and puts us just a few places below the USA.

After two years of campaigning the European Commission (EC) has finally released a draft of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). The treaty seeks to establish international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement, which would also make it easier to tackle those suspected of unlawfully downloading copyright files through their broadband internet service providers (ISP).
