Personalisation technology company Phorm , which controversially worked with UK broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns , appears to be giving up on the UK market by moving "some operational activities" to Brazil instead.

The UK Online Measurement (UKOM) company has revealed that there are now 38.8 Million internet connected users in the country, which is up from 36.9 Million 12 months ago. Those over the age of 50 (Silver Surfer territory) make up the bulk of new additions and account for 31% of the online audience.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a crucial complaint by Three (3) against a regional press advert for Orange UK's Mobile Broadband service. The advert boasted that Orange's "3G network covers more people in the UK than any other operator", which has been the subject of a long running dispute between itself and 3.

A new survey has revealed that consumer dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband ISP connections has rocketed upwards by 10% since 2009. It's perhaps no coincidence that in the same period we have seen a significant growth in adoption of up to 20-24Mbps ( ADSL2+ ) based broadband packages, which are slowly replacing the older 8Mbps ( ADSL ) products.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has reaffirmed his commitment to blanket the city in Wi-Fi broadband wireless internet access Hotspots before the 2012 Olympic Games (original news). As if to completely contradict this, a spokesperson for the mayor's office has now said that it might not even happen.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) seeking a repeal of sections 9 - 18 of the Digital Economy Act 2010. This covers the main thrust of the acts focus towards tackling online infringement of copyright (illegal p2p file sharing) by broadband ISP customers, specifically technical measures such as customer disconnection, website blocking and speed restrictions.

The British run Economist Intelligence Unit has released its latest 2010 Digital Economy Rankings (formerly known as the e-Readiness Rankings), which studies the coverage and quality of telecoms and internet / broadband infrastructure around the world. Sadly the UK doesn't even make the top 10 and instead placed a lowly 14th, one place lower than 2009 and just behind Japan.

Improvements to the European Union's 2009 Roaming Regulation (544/2009) are about to come into force (1st July) and should prevent UK Mobile Broadband users from being hit by MASSIVE "Bill Shocks" when continuing their internet data activity while roaming around Europe. The move puts a cap on how much consumers can be charged and places more responsibility on mobile operators to keep their customers informed.

YouGov, a research firm dedicated to measuring public opinion and consumer behaviour, has revealed that 84% of the UK Mobile Broadband customers it surveyed had experienced problems with their connection. Slow speeds dominated (67%) the top areas of concern, while coverage (49%) and connection stability (40%) were also prevalent.

BT and BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) have today signed a new wholesale contract for the supply of Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2. The broadband based BT Vision TV ( IPTV ) service will now be able to offer these popular TV channels to subscribers from 1st August (signup's will be taken from early July).

The BBC Trust has, as expected, given its provisional approval to Project Canvas, which aims to deliver an open UK standard for delivering subscription-free broadband TV services directly into homes via your broadband ISP and special set-top-boxes. However the service will need to be reviewed again in the future, 12 months after its commercial launch.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said that it will support legal challenges, such as those that could be brought by broadband ISPs like TalkTalk UK, against the recently passed and highly controversial Digital Economy Act (DEA). This is because the new law could be used against websites that publish material of public interest without permission (e.g. Wikileaks).

Telecoms operator BT is investing a staggering £2.5bn over the next few years so that 66% of the UK population can use its next generation of fibre optic broadband internet access services by 2015. Presently this roll-out has been dominated by 'up to' 40Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) technology but all that will soon change when the commercial deployment of 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises ( FTTH / P ) starts.

The European Commission (EC) has issued a "reasoned opinion" calling on the UK to strengthen the powers of its Data Protection Authority so that it complies with the EU's 1995 Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC). The move is related to the previous government’s inability to clamp down on Phorm , which controversially worked with broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns.
