Yesterdays crucial 2010 Fifa World Cup match between England and Slovenia, which occurred during working hours and also clashed with the Wimbledon Tennis tournament, saw broadband internet traffic in the UK climb to record breaking levels as office workers across the country logged on to stream live video of the match.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK already plans to launch a 100Mbps broadband service towards the end of this year, is currently trialling a 200Mbps package (details) for the future (2012 is a good bet, assuming enough demand) and has today revealed that it could even offer a 400Mbps product via its DOCSIS3 technology! Trials of 20Mbps upstream speeds are also underway.

David Williams, the Chief Executive of UK Satellite ISP Avanti Communications, has quietly let slip how much its soon-to-launch HYLAS1 broadband Satellite service will cost UK consumers. Speaking in reaction to yesterday's emergency budget announcement, Williams said, "Avanti can supply 8Mbps to anyone in the UK for £25 per month later this year when the HYLAS 1 satellite launches".

The UK governments Chancellor, George Osborne, has revealed plans to increase the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17.5% to 20% from 4th January 2011. The increase will raise £13bn a year to help plug the national debt. Much as you would expect it will also hit the price that we all pay for our broadband services.

Deltenna, a UK start-up that designs and manufactures wireless networking infrastructure and access points, has launched a small (18cm x 13cm) new self-install Wireless Broadband Enabler (WiBE) gadget that uses the 3G Mobile Broadband network to create a 2Mbps internet Hotspot. The key advantage of WiBE is that it can still work even where a 3G mobile phone can't register a signal.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a supposedly representative voice of the UK recorded music business (Rights Holders), has issued a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice complaint to Google. The 11th June letter demands that Google remove links to several popular file sharing (P2P) websites from its index because they are alleged to contain unlawful copyright infringing files.

Telecoms firm and ISP Daisy Group, which last week disposed of FREEDOM4 and its WiMAX wireless radio spectrum to UK Broadband Ltd / PCCW (here), has today acquired the connectivity and hosting solutions provider MurphX Innovative Solutions for £4.8 million. At the same time Daisy posted a net loss of £16.17m for the 15 months to the end of March 2010.

The UK government appears to be seeking the cheapest, as opposed to the best, solution for our country's many broadband access woes. A newly posted official notice has revealed more about government thinking on the matter, which looks set to favour any option that minimises public sector investment.

Tomorrow England will face Slovenia in their last and most important Group C match of the 2010 Fifa Football World Cup, losing is not an option. Many broadband ISPs anticipate that the game, which is the first to occur during normal working hours, will result in record breaking internet video streaming activity and cause a severe internet slowdown for everybody.

The Mobile Broadband boom appears to be slowing down rapidly as more and more UK consumers realise that the service often fails to match the hype. New data from Experian Hitwise reveals that the amount of internet searches for the service have decline by 50%. Comparison site Broadband Expert also reported a similar decline in sales.

Two UK ISPs , Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media , have come top in a study of customer loyalty and experience by Satmetrix, besting their chief rivals AOL , BT , Orange , TalkTalk and Tiscali (Tiscali is now a fully integrated part of the TalkTalk brand).

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), a forum for wireless broadband operators around the world who pioneer in global roaming over public Wi-Fi networks, has expanded its membership. The WBA also announced the public release of a set of specifications designed to aid the roaming between Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs).

Customers of ISP BT Total Broadband and O2 mobile have been given unlimited (Fair Usage Policy) access to 1.5 million BT FON and BT Openzone Wi-Fi Hotspots across the UK. Hotspots are public wireless internet access points that can usually be found in places like cafe's, airports and railway stations. They allow fast internet access on any Wi-Fi equipped device, such as an iPhone or Laptop, when away from the home or office.

Just what does "super fast" broadband actually mean? The UK coalition government's Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, recently attempted to answer that when he responded to a request for clarification put forward by Labour MP Tom Watson (West Bromwich East). The result was a somewhat less than convincing reply.

The popular Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet UK has this week been talking-up it's forthcoming new range of up to 40Mbps fibre optic ( FTTC ) based broadband packages, which will launch in September. In addition Richard Tang, Founder and MD of Zen Internet, has been named North and Midlands Regional winner of Ernst and Young Customer Service Entrepreneur of the Year.

Home and business ISP Demon Internet (THUS Group, Cable & Wireless), which has been somewhat quiet for the past few years, officially re-launched itself last night with a "reinvigorated branding and marketing effort". The provider also revealed its intention to launch a series of new business broadband products in July 2010 and extend the Demon Premier Broadband portfolio.

Wednesday's recent Spain v Switzerland game came top.

Communications operator and ISP Daisy Group, a newly combined business of Daisy Communications, FREEDOM4 PLC and Vialtus Solutions with over 40,000 UK customers, has sold its fixed WiMAX broadband wireless radio spectrum to the PCCW owned UK Broadband Limited for a cash price of £12.5m.
