A recent ruling in Ireland's High Court, in with copyright holders tried and failed to force a local broadband ISP (UPC) into adopting a "Three Strikes" system of warning and disconnection for customers suspected of involvement with "illegal" P2P file sharing, has exposed serious weaknesses.

Entanet UK has slammed Ofcom for failing to protect Net Neutrality, the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal, in its recently completed consultation. At the end of September the regulator hinted to a Westminster eForum that they could see a "real economic benefit" for a two-sided market where broadband ISPs favour any video/content (e.g. YouTube versus BBC's iPlayer) that pays them the most money.

The local Bradley Stoke Council is supporting new efforts to improve the areas woeful broadband access. Despite its population the town sits between two distant telephone exchanges in Almondsbury and Filton, which results in many people receiving internet speeds of just 512Kbps.

Customers of UK broadband ISP TalkTalk ( AOL UK, Tiscali , Opal ) are up in arms after the provider introduced a new system that automatically deletes any email suspected of being SPAM (junk mail). Sadly this appears to include many legitimate messages too.

UK ISP Breathe Internet (Breathe Networks Limited) has taken users of several different FREE internet email (freemail) addresses (e.g. computerweekly.net) by surprise after it suddenly, and seemingly without any effective warning, locked them out of their accounts unless they agreed to pay an annual fee.

Community network specialist Fibrestream ( NextGenUs ) has attacked the UK communications regulator ( Ofcom ) and questioned whether it shouldn't also be chopped in the governments imminent Comprehensive Spending Review after allowing KC ( Karoo , KCOM ) the ability to bundle services in the Hull and East Riding (Yorkshire) area last week.

The results from 536 respondents (polled in September 2010) to our latest monthly survey have revealed that half of UK people still preferred to take a shorter (1 month or less) contract with their broadband ISP package, as opposed to tying themselves down via a longer deal.

A survey of over 657 small UK business owners conducted by ISP and phone provider XLN Telecom has found that broadband internet access is more important to SME's than their gas and water supply. We'd like to see how long a firms staff could go without drinking water but health a safety rules might not approve.

Virgin Media has big ambitions for the future, and we don't just mean their brand new 100Mbps (download) broadband ISP service, which is due to launch before Christmas. They also have 200Mbps service trials, upstream 20Mbps trials, plans to offer 400Mbps in the distant future and may now be seeking to expand their network by using BT's own telegraph poles and cable ducts.

Microsoft has called for broadband ISPs around the world to adopt a new approach to addressing botnets and other malware impacting consumer machines. The software giant suggests that such computers, which are ironically most likely to be running Microsoft Windows, should have their internet access restricted until such time as the infection can be cured [INSERT Pun about adopting Mac OS or Linux].

New research, which is based off 48,408 internet speedtests conducted between March and August 2010, has revealed that Liverpool (England) is the fastest city for broadband access with an average download rate of 7.72Mbps (Megabits per second). By contrast Dumfries (Scotland) was the slowest at just 2.89Mbps.

Ofcom has today revealed the results of its consultation on measures that seek to encourage the rollout of "super-fast" Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband services across the UK. The move will require BT to open its cable ducts and improve access to their fibre optic lines for rival ISPs, such as TalkTalk and Sky Broadband .
