A new Legal Ombudsman for the UK has opened its doors today, which aims to help people resolve their complaints about lawyers. One of the first complaints to arrive was against the firm Gallant Macmillan Solicitors, which has been in the news several times recently after trying to obtain details of suspected "illegal" p2p copyright file sharers from broadband ISPs BT and PlusNet UK (here and here).

The i3 Group and CarrierWales have revealed new plans to trial fibre optic broadband services on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. The move marks i3's first foray into smaller scale rural deployments, having previously only focused on cities like Bournemouth and Dundee.

Samsung has demonstrated an early trial of its new WiMAX2 (IEEE 802.16m) broadband wireless technology and related devices at the CEATEC show in Tokyo, Japan. The setup managed to stream Full-HD 3D videos and 16 Full-HD videos on 4 LFD (Large Format LCD) televisions, which ran at the impressive speed of 330Mbps (Megabits per second).

BT Openreach has announced that its reduced Connection and Managed Install special offer on 40Meg fibre optic ( FTTC ) based broadband services has been extended from 31st December 2010 to the 30th June 2011.

Business ISP Viatel UK (Viatel Holding (Bermuda) Limited (VHB)) has announced the sale of its retail business VTL (UK) Ltd to MDNX Holding Ltd (MDNX). Viatel had reportedly already separated its retail arm from the European Network business and had been operating them as independent business units for the last year.

Business Internet Service Provider (ISP) Timico UK has announced the new acquisition of a Slough based mobile applications business, Handheld PCs, for an unspecified sum. The London UK High Court has delayed a request by lawyers Gallant Macmillan, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Sound (MoS), to have more details of suspected "illegal" p2p copyright file sharers handed over by broadband ISP BT Retail and PlusNet. The case - Ministry of Sound Recordings Ltd v Plusnet Plc - will now be heard next year on 12th January 2011.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the European Commission (EC) have confirmed that almost 40 countries have now reached a deal on the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). The treaty seeks to establish international standards on intellectual property rights (copyright) enforcement, although many fear that it could lead to unfair restrictions, especially with regards to broadband ISPs and internet access (i.e. "illegal" p2p file sharing).

BT has today announced the launch of a new nationwide survey (Race to Infinity) to gauge how much demand there is for its new superfast fibre optic broadband ISP services in the UK. Communities that show the most demand could find themselves appearing on the operators future rollout plans, including previously non-economically viable exchanges.

The latest quarterly (July to September 2010) internet malware report from Panda Security has revealed that 95% of email in circulation is still SPAM (i.e. junk marketing messages). In this period, the Top 10 countries were responsible for 55% of all spam in circulation. Happily the UK has managed to drop out of this list, thanks in part to tougher ISP controls (e.g. blocking port 25).

The latest monthly broadband ISP speed testing results for the past month of September (2010) has seen the average UK ISP internet download speed remain fairly unchanged at 4.942Mbps. Virgin Media continues to be the fastest, despite losing a lot of speed since the end of August.
