UK ISP BT has cut the price of its top triple play (broadband, TV and home phone) service bundles. In particular its 'Unlimited TV, Broadband and Calls' deal has now dropped from £48.99 per month to just £39.99, a saving of £108 per year.

UK ISP Demon Internet reports that it saw a significant rise in web traffic on Wednesday last week, as the UK's workforce logged in during the day to watch the rescue of the Chilean miners. The 33 miners had been trapped deep underground for more than two months and their eventual rescue quickly became a media and internet phenomenon.

The former boss of record label Warner Music UK, Rob Dickins, has called for the price of music albums to be "radically" cut to just £1. The idea is that such a price would make using your broadband ISP to download copyright music "illegally", for free, almost pointless.

A scientist working at the University of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) has warned that existing data rates (i.e. cross country network connection speeds etc.) are already exceeding more than half the maximum known rate of fibre optic cables.

A new Sky Broadband study of 5,200 UK consumers has found that 30% are frustrated with the stability of their internet connection speeds, yet 44% didn't care what speed they received, just so long as the connection worked.

The BT Race to Infinity campaign, which is part of a nationwide survey to gauge how much demand there is for the operators fibre optic broadband internet access services (here), has been hit by yet another snafu after its PR firm (Porter Novelli) issued a mass email to the campaigns supporters using the CC field instead of BCC (hidden) and thus exposed everybody's private addresses.

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced that its final Code of Practice for tackling "illegal" internet P2P (File Sharing) copyright infringement by customers of UK broadband providers, a requirement of the controversial Digital Economy Act 2010 (DEA), should be published sometime in "the next few weeks".

Mobile operator Three (3) has completed "phase one" of its GBP400m Mobile Broadband network upgrade, which adds 4,900 new sites (covering an area of more than twice the size of Wales) to its 3G coverage. In total Three is now home to a whopping 12,400 sites (50,000km² of coverage), significantly more than the 7,500 they started out with.

The controversial YouView (Project Canvas) service, which claims to have developed an "open standard" for bringing subscription free broadband ISP based internet TV services (e.g. BBC iPlayer ) directly into homes via special Set-Top-Boxes (STBs), has received another sharp blow after BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) joined Virgin Media in lodging an official competition complaint with Ofcom and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

Life assistance company CPP has conducted an "ethical hacking" experiment across six UK cities and found that almost 40k private home WiFi networks lacked adequate protection and nearly a quarter had no password whatsoever. It also found that roughly half of home Wi-Fi networks could be hacked in less than 5 seconds.

The European Commission (EC) has revealed, in its latest survey of 27,000 households throughout the EU, that 43% still do not have Internet access. Approximately one in five claimed that this was due to the high costs of the internet. The EU's current Digital Agenda promises to bring basic broadband to all Europeans by 2013 and superfast 30Mbps to 100Mbps services by 2020.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), a specialist UK judicial body that rules on cases involving competition or economic regulatory issues, has ordered Ofcom to cut BT Group's broadband and phone line access prices to rival ISPs.

BT's UK Chief Security Technology Officer (CSTO), Bruce Schneier, has given an interesting keynote speech at the 11th annual RSA Conference Europe 2010 in London (Metropole Hotel), called 'Security, Privacy and the Generation Gap'. Schneier warned that the need for bigger profits and related abuses by internet based social networking services were leading to the "death of privacy".
