Broadband ISPs in the UK have welcomed efforts by the national communications regulator, Ofcom, to force BT into cutting its wholesale prices by 12% below inflation in rural parts of the country.

BT's Chairman, Sir Michael Rake, has slammed criticism of its dominant position in the UK telecoms and broadband internet access market. Rake also reiterated his hope that BT could help 90% of the country gain access to superfast broadband by 2017 and included an update on progress at its Cornwall project, where its 1000th customer has just been connected.

The BBC has announced plans to conduct a major new nationwide survey of street level mobile phone and Mobile Broadband coverage in the UK. Ofcom, which is working on a similar study, currently claims that 91% of the UK has 2G coverage and 76% has 3G coverage.
