Cable giant Virgin Media has once again topped the monthly UK charts for the fastest broadband internet provider (ISP) after recording an average download speed of 13.231Mbps. By contrast the national average is just 7.150Mbps.

Akamai's latest Q4 2010 State of the Internet report has found that the world average broadband download speed is still just above 1.9Mbps, while the UK average is growing in respectability to 4.3Mbps. Sadly only one city, Bradford, made the list of Top 100 Fastest Cities for internet access.

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has agreed to step in and help BT conduct a proper trial of its controversial new Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product. This allows rival UK internet providers (ISP) to build their own next gen broadband networks by using the operators existing cable ducts and telegraph poles.
