The UK telecoms regulator has today published the outcome of their major Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which largely tweaks their existing approach to market regulation in order to help promote competition and investment in gigabit broadband (1000Mbps+) and business connectivity. But not everybody is going to be happy.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today noted that, following the expiry of existing commitments, and considerations about how best to support BT’s landline-only customers, BT has confirmed that this group of customers will receive a £1 per month increase on their line rental, with no increase in call charges, from 31st March 2026 for a period of 12 months.

National network operator Openreach (BT) has published a new March 2026 update on their roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP technology. The update reflects all the recent changes and progress with their existing locations (doesn’t add new areas) and has also tweaked their info. to give people “clearer information about when to expect full fibre build to start“.

National UK broadband operator Openreach (BT) has announced that their current Acting Director for Northern Ireland, Lauren McGaughey, has formally been appointed to the role on a permanent basis. She replaces Garret Kavanagh in the role, who recently became their MD for Complex Engineering.

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 50 publicly-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across Wales as part of the industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project (up from 30 in July 2025), which last year succeeded (here) in extending geographic 4G cover from at least one operator to 95% of the UK (aggregate).

A new poll of 4,298 UK adults aged 50+, which was conducted by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider Phonely (vested interest), has claimed that 58.7% of UK adults aged over 50 are still unaware that the country’s ancient legacy phone network is being switched off on 31st January 2027.

Combined broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that they’re set to replace their former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) since 2021, Patricia Cobian, with David Melcon from 2nd April 2026. In case anybody has forgotten, Patricia announced last year that she was jumping ship to the BT Group (here).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has significantly extended their special offer for broadband ISPs, which discounts the charge on 10Gbps Cablelinks for their FTTP and FTTC lines (GEA), nationwide, to just £399 +vat when taken on Layer 2 Switches (L2S) older than 6 months.

National broadband and network access provider Openreach (BT), which has already put 6,000 Electric Vehicles (EV) on UK roads to support their broadband and phone engineers, have today signed an agreement with Smart Charge, Sainsbury’s nationwide EV charging network, to provide its engineers with access to their “ultra-rapid charging hubs” in 80 locations across the country.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has worked with mobile network partner Ericsson to introduce two new capabilities to their core 5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+) mobile broadband network – Network Slice Selection Function (NSSF) and Network Exposure Function (NEF), which enables programmable connectivity, letting businesses and their developers request network performance on demand.

Broadband ISPs BT, EE and Plusnet have tweaked their policy on annual price rises so that new customers who join after 1st March 2026 will not immediately be hit by their latest +£4 monthly price hike (first announced in July 2025), which is due to be introduced a month later in April 2026.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today announced the first product to be released as part of the company’s sovereign platform – ‘Sovereign Voice‘, which allows businesses to make and receive calls over a secure connection, while all call routing remains within the UK’s own borders.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their annual Pricing Trends Report for 2026, which among other things confirms that the take-up of cheaper social broadband ISP and mobile tariffs for those on state benefits has jumped to 532,000 customers in June 2025 (up from 506,000 last year). But that’s still just 8.6% of eligible households (e.g. those on Universal Credit) and awareness remains low.

Consumer website Expert Reviews has published the winners of their annual Best Broadband Awards 2026 event, which surveyed UK consumers in an effort to identify the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of categories. Overall most of the awards were scooped up by Vodafone, followed by Plusnet.

The FTTH Council Europe has this afternoon published their latest annual (2026) update on the progress being made across 27 EU member states (inc. the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland) in switching off older copper based broadband networks, which forms part of the wider move to adopt gigabit full-fibre (FTTP/H/B) infrastructure.

The Government’s recently published Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for telecommunications (here) appears to have rejected calls by some, but not all, alternative UK broadband networks for Ofcom to make access to run new fibre optic cables via Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and poles cheaper in rural areas.
