Openreach (BT) has announced that more than 45,000 premises in Salford (Greater Manchester) can now access their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which has been deployed as part of their work to cover 4 million premises by March 2021 and possibly 15 million by around 2025.

Portsmouth-based UK ISP toob, which was setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and has attracted investment of £75m (here), is officially starting the rollout of their 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Southampton, despite Virgin Media’s threat to “keep them out of our city.”

Police are investigating after around 2,200 premises in Cambourne were left without broadband ISP and phone access to Openreach’s (BT) national network following a major theft of the operator’s core copper cables, which is the latest in a spate of seemingly related “Metal Theft” incidents in Cambridgeshire.

A major outage of the Yahoo! email service is today impacting various UK internet service providers that use the same platform, such as Sky Broadband, BT and TalkTalk, among others. The problems began at around 7am this morning and appear to be on-going this afternoon.

Installations of Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based UK ultrafast broadband ISP technology will soon begin seeing a new Optical Network Unit (ONT), which is not only very compact (pictured top) but also comes in at a third of the cost of the existing unit. Obviously they’ve sacrificed a few little things.

A hint of progress is in the air as the Welsh Government (WG), Openreach (BT) and Building Digital UK (DCMS) programme are continuing their efforts to find a solution for the “stranded assets” problem, which reflects thousands of premises on unfinished (part-built) “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) deployments in Wales.

Last year’s move by Openreach (BT) to drop the deployment cost of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband ISP network infrastructure by an average of 75% (here), which focused upon new build UK homes at sites with fewer than 30 premises, has been extended to include commercial premises.

The North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) has revealed that it could spend the £1m grant awarded to it in June 2019 by DEFRA’s Rural Broadband Infrastructure (RBI) scheme on extending “superfast broadband” connectivity around rural industrial estates on the edge of Scunthorpe.

Openreach’s (BT) broadband ISP and phone network in Cambridgeshire (England) has been struck by a series of “major cable thefts” over the past two weeks, which is understood to have disrupted communication services for around 4,000 premises. A reward of £1,000 is being offered to help catch the criminals.

A new report reveals that Ofcom’s recent decision to soften regulation of BT’s (Openreach) high speed fibre optic Ethernet / data lines in the Central London Area (CLA) has resulted in rival UK ISPs – TalkTalk and Vodafone – lodging an appeal against the decision with the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT).

The state aid supported Superfast Dorset (SFD) project, which has so far worked with Openreach (BT) to extend the reach of FTTC/P “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 97%+ of the county (including Poole and Bournemouth), has proposed a £5m extension to its existing Phase 3 contract.

A new UK Government funded project called NoServiceHere is hoping, among other things, to harness the power of the Twitter community in order to help identify areas (rural and urban) of poor mobile signal by curating geospatial data, which can then be used to help focus the rollout of 3G, 4G and future 5G networks.

A few customers with G.fast based hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP lines have this week noticed a modest boost to their download speeds after a resync, which appears as if it could be associated to an interesting change with the operator’s spectrum frequency allocation (band plan) for the service.
