The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has published a list of finalists for the “Internet Hero” and “Internet Villain” categories at this year’s forthcoming annual internet industry awards, although the decision to put Mozilla under the Villain category for their DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) push may be contentious.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has today imposed a £100,000 fine on BT-owned mobile operator EE after the company sent over 2.5 million direct marketing messages (texts) to its customers during early 2019, albeit without gaining their consent to do so.

A legal challenged brought by Liberty in the UK High Court has pointed to the “undoubtedly unlawful” bulk retention of largely innocent peoples communications data (telecoms and internet) by MI5, which stems from an apparent failure to adhere to the safeguards set out in the Government’s 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct).

The fallout from a 2015 cyberattack against TalkTalk’s UK website, which exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers to hackers, appears to be continuing after a new report alleges that the broadband ISP failed to correctly inform 4,545 customers that their data had been compromised (instead they were told it was NOT exposed).

Mobile operators Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 are to be officially told by the Government that they will be banned from deploying hardware and software from Chinese tech giant Huawei into the core of their future 5G based mobile broadband networks, although non-core 5G kit (antennas etc.) will be exempt.

The UK Government, broadband ISPs and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are set to meet on the 8th May 2019 in order to discuss Google’s forthcoming implementation of encrypted DNS (DoH – DNS over HTTPS), which politicians fear could break their internet censorship plans.

A significant change is on the way that could improve the security of the internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) by adopting DNS over HTTPS (DoH), although this could also create lots of new problems for broadband ISPs and mobile operators (e.g. disrupting UK Government required censorship systems) that may be hard to overcome.

The UK Government is to publish a new ‘Online Harms White Paper‘ that proposes to establish a regulator for internet content, which among other things would be tasked with forcing websites to remove bad content (e.g. hate speech, fake news) and even blocking or imposing fines upon those that fail to comply.

The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a blackmail charge against Daniel Kelley (21) from South Wales, who back in 2016 pleaded guilty to 11 offences (including blackmail, computer hacking and fraud) related to the 2015 hack of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP website.

A security expert has uncovered how scammers are abusing the platform in order to pose as fake customer service agents, albeit by using one of the oldest but easily overlooked tricks in the book.
