Satellite operator Eutelsat Communications has launched its new Tooway consumer broadband service in the UK, which aims to offer download speeds of up to 2Mbps (256Kbps upload) for just a fraction of the price (£29.99 +vat per month) that most two-way (download and upload) satellite ISPs offer. Furthermore, come 2010, Eutelsat's new KA-SAT satellite will also enable Tooway to offer speeds of up to 10Mbps!

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 31st March 2009. The groups broadband service saw a slight decline in quarterly uptake by adding +130,000 new customers to its service, which compares with +163,000 during Q4-2008. However this is still strong growth and helped to take their total broadband base from 1,955,000 in Q4 to 2,085,000 now.

UK broadband ISP O2 ( Be Broadband ) has won six key service satisfaction categories as well as being voted best overall provider by the latest survey from comparison site BroadbandChoices. The survey also revealed that 53% of people were considering changing their ISP in the next six months, while 49% were Very Satisfied or Fairly Satisfied with their ISPs After Sales Support.

The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) has become the latest major Internet organisation to warn that IPv4 addresses will run out by 2010. ARIN has now begun issuing letters to ISPs owning blocks of IPv4 addresses, which encourages them to adopt IPv6. The group will also begin making it more difficult to gain new IPv4 addresses via a tougher vetting process.

UK ISP SAQ has revamped its website and launched a new range of broadband services, which includes a bonded ADSL2+ package that can reach speeds of up to 96Mbps (4Mbps upstream) with unlimited downloads. Typically the package doesn't come cheap and will set you back £159.99 per month, though 24Mbps residential options start at just £9.99.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a self-regulatory body that works with UK broadband ISPs to help block access to websites containing indecent images of children and racial hatred, has reported a fall of nearly 10% in the number of international websites with related content.

BT Business has said that UK businesses could save up to 65% on the cost of connecting all their offices via its new secure, high speed Ethernet-based broadband services. The reduction refers to the access circuits that connect sites into BT's MPLS (IP VPN) networks.

Phorm, which controversially works with UK broadband ISPs (e.g. BT WebWise) to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns, has launched a new website aimed at countering what it sees as a "smear campaign" by privacy advocates - StopPhoulplay.com.

UK ISP TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ) is offering 3 months FREE broadband and voice calls on its Broadband and Phone Essentials package until the end of this month. The web-exclusive offer is presented on their front page, which notes that you still have to pay for line-rental at £11.25 per month.

UK ISP Be Broadband has issued a new update reminding people that all 12 month service contracts will come with 3 months FREE broadband until the end of this month. Under the terms of Be's promotion, customers who buy the Be Value (8Mbps) package will save £40.50 over a 12 month period.

Mobile operator T-Mobile UK has teamed up with Virgin to offer broadband wireless Internet access on the Virgin West Coast Main Line service via its Wi-Fi Hotspots. The service will initially be rolled out via Virgin's 52 Pendolino trains, and by mid-summer, the 21 Super Voyager trains will also be Wi-Fi enabled.

The UK Home Office has been accused of colluding with Phorm after several emails between the two, which were released under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, revealed that they had discussed a lot more than previously thought and may have even resulted in the government adjusting its official guidance to be more suitable for Phorm’s system.

The UK Home Office has launched a consultation into its Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP), which is part of the wider Communications Data Bill and will see all YOUR email accesses and website visits (not content though) stored for a period of one year. The system is expected to cost a staggering £2bn over a 10-year period, though mercifully plans for a centralised government database to store all the information have been scrapped.

BT has launched a new Home (Land-Line) and Mobile Broadband ( 3G HSPA ) bundle that costs from just £15.65 a month. The deal essentially combines the BT Total Broadband Option 1 (Includes: BT Home Hub, up to 8Mbps speeds, 10GB monthly usage allowance and 250 Wi-Fi minutes a month) home service with their Mobile Broadband (1GB monthly usage allowance) service.

The latest study of over 3,000 Internet users conducted by Virgin Media has revealed that 18% of online surfers don't know what broadband actually is, 53% thought broadband relied on having a phone line (satellite, Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband solutions don't) and almost half are puzzled by the term meg (usually short for 'Megabit(s) per second' or 'Mb' - a measurement of broadband speed, though 8% thought it meant Megapixels).

Last March i3 Group (H2O Networks) warned that the government was in danger of creating a digital divide by dis-incentivising investment in superfast connectivity unless it cut fibre taxation (tax on the rateable value of the basic infrastructure). Jeff McKeown, Sales director for Fibre Technologies, has today supported this call after yesterday’s budget failed to address the issue.

Several Italian newspapers have this morning reported that The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Opal etc. ) is preparing to make a new bid for Tiscali UK by the end of this month. The news has subsequently caused shares in the debt ridden broadband ISP to jump by 10%.

Ofcom has warned that Project Canvas, a joint open on-demand broadband TV (IPTV) standard being developed by the BBC, ITV and BT (original news), could face similar competition concerns to those that ultimately stopped Project Kangaroo (UKVOD) earlier this year (here). The service will be open for all public broadcasters, device developers and ISPs.
