The CEO of O2 UK, Ronan Dunne, has apologised for the poor performance of its mobile data network since the summer, especially in London. Dunne admits that the operator’s network was simply unable to cope with the surge in data usage by Mobile Broadband and iPhone users, though improvements are already working their way into the system.

Scottish Labour's Economy and Skills spokesman, John Park (MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife), has called on the Scottish Tourist Board (Visit Scotland) and the British Hospitality Association (BHA) to include Internet access as a factor in hotel star ratings. Park has called for all of Scotland's hotels to offer FREE broadband access.

BT has cast a shadow over the government’s Digital Britain commitment, which aims to make a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps available to everybody in the UK by 2012. The operator is threatening legal action if proposals by Kip Meek – the Independent Spectrum Broker (ISB), which would involve extending current 3G Mobile Broadband licenses indefinitely, are carried forward.

BT is facing complaints from rivals TalkTalk and Sky Broadband about the wholesale viability of its next generation fibre optic based broadband services ( FTTH / P , FTTC ), which are about to begin their commercial rollout around the UK. The ISPs are both demanding improvements to BT's wholesale product which they claim, currently lacks the flexibility to help providers differentiate themselves from rivals.

The results from 1043 respondents to our latest monthly survey reveal that 42% of people rate 'Reliability' as the most important factor when picking a new broadband ISP, which is closely followed by 'Speed' (37%). Interestingly 'Price' is no longer seen as being the key factor, gaining support from just 15%.

UK ISPs have warned that plans put forward by the recent Digital Economy Bill (here), which aims to tackle illegal music, film and software file sharing (P2P) among broadband consumers, could push up subscription fees by a staggering £25 extra per year.

Broadband ISPs O2 and AAISP have come top in this year’s annual Thinkbroadband Customer Service Awards 2009. O2 came top of the "Large ISPs" list with a good Customer Service and Reliability rating of 75% and 68% respectively. By comparison AAISP came top of the "Niche [Smaller] Providers" list with an impressive score of 89% and 82% respectively.

The deal includes Sky’s up to 20Mbps Unlimited package for free, which usually costs an extra £10 per month or £15 if you don't take the free SkyTalk service.

UK satellite operator Avanti Communications has announced the placing of 21,500,000 new ordinary shares of 1p each, which will raise £86 million to fund the procurement, launch and operation of its future broadband Satellite, HYLAS 2. The placing proceeds will complement debt facilities amounting to £194m in aggregate to be provided by The Export-Import Bank of the USA and COFACE.

ISP Be Broadband has announced that they will be supplying Freerunner, a free public Wi-Fi service, with FREE broadband for local communities that are currently without existing connections. 46 communities have been selected across the UK to receive free WiFi for a minimum of 3 years regardless of the current connectivity in the area.

Customers of Tiscali UK's broadband services have received somewhat of a Christmas shock after the ISPs new owners, TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ), warned that users who did not "upgrade" to TalkTalk's phone line rental service would be charged an extra +£5 per month for their package!

UK ISP BT has revealed that its retail service has, on 9th December, finally passed the 5 Million broadband customers mark. The operator also added that its £1.5bn rollout of next generation fibre optic broadband services ( FTTC , FTTP ) is several months "ahead of schedule" and now on course to complete and reach 40% (10 Million) UK homes by March 2012.

Just a reminder that the UK Value Added Tax (VAT) holiday, which was introduced to help stimulate the consumer economy follow 2008/9’s financial crisis - by reducing VAT to 15%, will alas be coming to an end and returning to the previous rate of 17.5% from 1st January 2010. This change will impact everybody and of course result in a small monthly price rise on all broadband services.

TalkTalk first truly began life in 2003 after its parent company, the Carphone Warehouse (CPW), launched a residential landline service via its Opal platform. The TalkTalk that most people know today began life towards the end of 2004 with the launch of its combined broadband and phone calls bundle (broadband became free in 2006).

The director of Eclipse Internet , Clodagh Murphy , has warned that the government’s proposed £0.50 +vat per month tax on all fixed phone lines, which will help to fund the rollout of next generation broadband services, could risk forcing those who have not yet adopted broadband to "cease their landline and only use mobile technology."

ISP Vtesse Networks has announced plans to deploy a super-fast fixed wireless broadband trial in rural Wiltshire. The first community to be served will be Chapel Plaister, a "Final Third" hamlet near Corsham. Further communities in the area may be added as the trial progresses.

UK television Channel 4 and broadband ISP TalkTalk ( AOL , Tiscali etc. ) have both joined Project Canvas, which aims to create a standards based open environment for broadband connected digital television (DTV) receivers. The project was started by the BBC, ITV, BT and will also allow IPTV services, such as the BBC's iPlayer, to be viewed via TV sets.
