ispa ukThe UK Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) has officially revealed the finalists for its 12th annual industry awards for 2010. Finalists in the majority of categories are selected based on three months of testing by ISPA's technical testing partner, Epitiro.

Interestingly Orange and NewNet dominate with four nominations, while last year's winners O2 and Clara.net have both been nominated again in the Best Consumer Broadband and Best Business Broadband categories.

ISPA Secretary General, Nicholas Lansman said:

"Each year the ISPA Awards rewards the UK’s top Internet companies after a process that involves thorough technical testing and judging from an independent panel. I would like to congratulate all of the finalists and look forward to welcoming them to the Awards gala dinner ceremony, which looks like being one of our biggest to date."

There don't appear to be any major surprises this year, although the inclusion of Orange and Virgin Media UK for 'Best Consumer Customer Service' might be unexpected by some. We also note that the 'Best Dial-Up ISP' category has finally kicked the bucket.

As per usual the Internet Heroe and Villain awards will be announced in June and all the winners will be unveiled on the 8th July at a black tie dinner and awards ceremony at the Grosvenor Marriott Hotel. Tickets for the event can be purchased via the ISPA Awards website: http://www.ispaawards.org.uk .

It's just like the British Soap Awards. There's nothing worse than when an industry congratulates itself!

Agreed. ISP's with 11% customer service rating, getting on to the best customer service short list! A complete farce.

How does freedom4 wifi manage to compete with the mobile operators? They won the award last year.

From the looks of it Freedom4 WiFi best connect users onto WiFi or 3G. Sounds like a good idea, anything that makes it easier to get faster speeds or cheaper access deserves recognition.

As I understand it, FREEDOM4's 3G link hands-off to 3's network, so why is F4 included when its actual Mobile Broadband service is provided by another consumer operator? I can see the point. Didn't Wi-Fi used to have it's own category? If they're trying to merge everything wireless then the award shouldn't be called "Mobile Broadband" as that name is for a specific group of cell network based technologies.

The award is for Mobile Broadband which both WiFi & 3G qualify for. The previous comment sounds like a worried mobile operator. Well done Gradwell for internet telephony!

I agree with Sarah and I thought that the mobile operators were beginning to use WiFi hotspots themselves to offload data from their congested networks?

What have Vispa done for Internet safety?

I think the mobile operators could learn a lot from FREEDOM4 WiFi - they seem to have the model just right. I'm surprised one of the operators haven't bought them as know one else seems to being doing what FREEDOM4 have achieved.

What a response - I didn't expect to hear so much feedback. Definately looks like a company to watch out for may be their the new rising star in the ISP/mobile world. I'll be sure to give a couple of my guys FREEDOM4 dongles and see how we get on.

As for VISPA I'm not sure what they've done for Internet safety either.

I don't think they've done anything for internet safety! Let's see if they win!

How can you allow Kingston or Karoo to be placed into this award scheme when they fail to let their customers have freedom of choice. I paid £40 per month for unlimited access plus free calls and a TV package from BT when I lived outside of the Hull area. I know pay £54 per month for limited access 10gb no free calls and no TV package. Can I move to another provider. NO! Place Kingston on a fair field and they will sink in weeks unless they get a grip. Prisoners in HM Prison Hull have more options than those living outside of the wall.
