Ofcom's latest UK Adult Media Literacy (PDF) report has found that 73% of adults used the internet in 2009, up from 63% in 2007, and we are becoming more security conscious while online. Some 80% of adults with a social networking profile are more likely to only allow friends or family to see it, compared with 48% in 2007.

Liberal Democrat party, which is now officially part of a government coalition with the Conservatives, has held a special Sunday conference with its members in which a commitment to repeal part of the controversial Digital Economy Act 2010 (DEA) was crucially reaffirmed. The move could spell good news for broadband ISPs, assuming it has any impact.

Cable operator Virgin Media has re-adjusted its broadband and phone package costs again, offering a lower price for the first 3 months of service on all of their 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50Mbps broadband packages. The reduced prices apply to either broadband taken separately or as a phone bundle.

Mobile operator O2 UK has cut the cost of its Pay As You Go (PAYG) Mobile Broadband USB Modems (Dongle) from £19.99 to just £9.99 from today until 31st May 2010. O2 has also added the Asus UL30a (Windows® 7 Home Premium) Netbook computer to its range of pay monthly Mobile Broadband offers; expect to pay £30 per month (plus a one-off £79.99) for a bundle of the Netbook, a 3GB usage allowance, 300 texts and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Internet Search Engine and advertising giant Google has admitted that using their Street View cars to map peoples home Wi-Fi wireless networks "was a mistake". The controversial practice was discovered in April by a "horrified" German Federal Data Protection Commissioner, Peter Schaar (here).

Customer of Virgin Media UK, specifically its fixed line cable broadband ISP products, have been left unable to access several internet file storage websites (including the popular RapidShare.com) for around 24 hours following a fault on Virgin's platform.

Roger Webster, Managing Director of Nottingham-based Webro, a specialist in communications cables and connectors, has called on the new UK government to press on with plans to support the rollout of fibre optic broadband infrastructure. Webster warned that failing to do this will "continue to cause major bottlenecks" unless "investment plans are driven quickly forward".

UK ISP O2 ( Be Broadband ) has released its latest results to the end of March 2010, which saw their total fixed line broadband subscriber base climb from 591,514 in Q4-2009 to 600,000 (+56.3% year-on-year growth). However the passing of this milestone would appear to mask a slowdown in O2's broadband uptake.

Business communications provider Viatel has given a cautious welcome to BT's announcement that it will expand the planned reach of its superfast broadband network from 40% of UK homes to 66% by 2015. However it has warned businesses "not to get too carried away" because issues of patchy availability and variable speeds are unlikely to vanish overnight.

The i3 Group and Fibrecity have today announced that their fibre optic based 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) broadband ISP network will be extended to reach more than 1 million UK homes and businesses over the next four years! The service, which is already available in the south coast city of Bournemouth, can also temporarily "boost" speeds up to 1Gbps for quick downloading.

ISP BT Retail has today given its official support to the controversial OnLive service, which allows you to play the latest PC, PS3 and XBox360 games (Mass Effect2, Borderlands etc.) without even owning them. The service works by using your broadband internet connection to stream a live video feed of the game to your screen where it can be controlled remotely.

UK ISP BT Retail has announced its latest results to 31st March 2010 and confirmed plans to extend their next generation fibre optic broadband ( FTTC , FTTH / P ) rollout to roughly "two-thirds of UK premises by 2015 for an incremental cost of around £1bn" (66% of the population); first reported last Saturday (here).

The i3 Group ( H2O Networks, Fibrecity ), which repeatedly called on the previous Labour government to scrap plans for a 50p broadband tax on all fixed phone lines, has questioned whether the newly announced coalition between the Conservative and Liberal Democrat party will be able to do a better job of funding next generation broadband deployment around the UK.

The latest Q1-2010 Point Topic UK research into worldwide broadband access tariffs has revealed that the overall price of a single Megabit (1Mbps) of bandwidth has dropped across all internet delivery technologies in the last quarter. The cost of a megabit over DSL ( ADSL , ADSL2+ etc.) has dropped by 4% in the quarter, Cable Modem ( DOCSIS ) is down by 3% and fibre optic ( FTTH etc.) by more than 5% over the period.
