Strategy Analytics, a market research firm, has ranked the United Kingdom 22 (BCI 5.97) in the world out of 57 other top countries based on a Broadband Composite Index score of broadband internet penetration, affordability, speed and value for money. By comparison France managed to place 12th (BCI 6.45) and Germany 15th (BCI 6.38), while the USA came behind us on 23rd (BCI 5.96).

As per usual the TOP 5 spots are held by a familiar bunch of counties; South Korea (BCI 9.14), Hong Kong (BCI 7.58), the Netherlands (BCI 7.53), Lithuania (BCI 7.52) and Japan (BCI 7.42). It's perhaps no coincidence that most of these have well developed fibre optic broadband networks, which are capable of offering extremely fast internet connection speeds (e.g. FTTH 100Mbps+).


It's interesting to note what Piper says about the USA, "with essentially zero intra-platform competition, US service providers have little incentive to innovate offerings or differentiate beyond par". In comparison the UK should have a highly competitive market, although unfortunately we cannot find out why we score so far down without paying $6,999 for the full report. Pass.
