Broadband ISP TalkTalk reports that internet traffic over its UK network spiked at 460Gbps (Gigabits per second) on Sunday evening (“significantly more” than normal) as customers went online to watch Austrian pilot Felix Baumgartner jump to Earth from a balloon (Red Bull Stratos) at the edge of space.

Customers of UK cable operator Virgin Media have spent the past few days suffering from a mix of above normal latency and network congestion during peak times (late afternoon/night), which occurred after one of the ISPs public peering providers, Atrato, switched most of its traffic flow to the ISPs disadvantage (i.e. changed their routing).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today officially announced the launch of its new Sky Hub router, which has been “designed and built by Sky’s in-house engineering team” and delivers improved wireless speeds and range by automatically scanning for and selecting the best available wifi channel.

It took longer than most but O2 (BE Broadband) has now finally implemented a network-wide block (censorship) that prevents its customers from accessing the NewzBin2 (NewzBin) website, which London’s High Court last year deemed to be responsible for facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

The International Telecommunication Union has revealed that the average price of fixed line telephone, mobile (cellular) and fixed broadband Internet services around the world has fallen by 30% between 2008 and 2011 (-75% for fixed line broadband alone). Meanwhile telecoms revenues climbed and the UK improved its global rank.

Broadband provider ADSL24 has had an interesting couple of months. A quick glance at the company’s accounts (06272441) suggested that the ISP might have had difficulty turning a profit and most recently appointed three new directors. On top of that its trading name has just changed.

Customers of O2 UK (GiffGaff, TescoMobile) have been hit by yet another major national outage of the operators Mobile Broadband and phone service, which began at around midday on Friday (12th Oct 2012). Roughly 10% of the providers subscribers have been unable to make or receive calls, send texts or use data.

ISPreview.co.uk isn’t the only one to notice the ridiculous amount of banned adverts for Virgin Media’s broadband, phone and TV packages, which the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has repeatedly accused of being “misleading“. This week saw the BBC’s famous consumer affairs TV show, Watchdog, take the ISP to task with a comical twist.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to grant Code Powers to Sea Fibre Networks Limited. The move would allow the firm to carry out street works in Wales and Staffordshire (England) that should improve the country’s existing fibre optic link with Ireland.

The UK government’s Intelligence Committee confirmed this week that it has been investigating security concerns related to Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications firm, and its involvement in the country’s national broadband and phone market. The Broadband Stakeholders Group (BSG), a government think-tank, has published a new study that examines the predicted demand for superfast broadband ISP products. The good news is that it “gives cause for optimism and confidence“, with the UK comparing well on the international stage, but big challenges remain.

The group has specifically called on members of the public to help them stop metal thieves.
