KC, the incumbent internet and phone provider for Hull and East Yorkshire (England), has successfully completed the initial roll-out of their “super-fast” 350Mbps capable and fibre optic based Lightstream broadband service to pass 15,000 local premises. It now plans to reach an extra 30,000 homes and businesses by March 2015.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that it is giving away 20 free Mobile Broadband modems (dongles) to community hubs in the isolated Highlands and Islands villages of Melvich and Durness in Scotland. The port town of Invergordon further south will also get similar treatment.

Several Lancashire based broadband ISPs, including LonsdaleNET, B4RN, TalkTalk and others, suffered a serious loss of internet connectivity that lasted for over 10 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday after BTOpenreach engineers accidentally cut through a vital GEO fibre optic cable.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has told a Westminster Media Forum event that it will be the responsibility of each broadband ISP to decide which of their customers are officially defined as “subscribers” and thus susceptible to the new copyright infringement rules, which are designed to clampdown on “illegal” internet piracy.

The EU has released data on retail prices for fixed broadband ISP services, which reveals a pattern of price reduction over the last three years for bundled offers. It also finds that price competition is mainly taking place in the market for download speeds of above 4Mbps (Megabits per second).

Ofcom UK has today proposed a new framework to support the future use of White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless broadband technology on a licence exempt basis. The new service harnesses unused radio spectrum, which exists between Digital TV channels (470MHz to 790MHz), to deliver wifi style connectivity over a wide area.
