Virgin Media Failing to Fix Peak Time Broadband Latency and Peering Woes

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has so far failed to completely resolve its broadband peering problems, which re-emerged over a week ago and has left many customers to suffer from high latency (bad for multiplayer games) and video buffering problems during peak times.

Ofcom has published a new Analysys Mason report that examines the cost of various civil engineering technologies for deploying superfast fibre optic broadband ISP services in the United Kingdom. It reveals that roll-out costs could be slashed by 10% if some of the latest innovations were adopted by BT and others.

The communications regulator has published its annual 2012 Infrastructure Report, which claims that “close to” 100% of premises in the United Kingdom can now receive a broadband service (71% take-up) and just 10% can only get sub-2Mbps speeds (down from 14% in 2011). Superfast broadband (25Mbps+) is also available to 65% of homes and businesses (7% take-up).

Ofcom Plan for Future 5G Mobile Broadband and 700MHz Spectrum Release

Ofcom has today begun to set out plans that will eventually enable the release of new airwaves (UHF radio spectrum), such as the controversial 700MHz and 600MHz band used by Digital TV services, which could be used by a future generation of 5G Mobile Broadband or WiFi style internet solutions. But it will be 2018 before anything happens.

The annual uSwitch.com Mobile Awards 2012, which took place this week in London’s Covent Garden (Circus) area, have named Three UK as the Best Mobile Network and the Fastest Network for 3G based Mobile Broadband speeds. The operator was also crowned as the best network for roaming.

UK Consumers Raise Broadband ISP Data Privacy Concerns

A new survey of 2,000 people in the UK has revealed that consumers have “widespread worries” about the amount of personal information that broadband ISPs and mobile networks collect and hold about them. In fact 55% said they were “very or extremely worried” about the situation (50% for mobile networks).
