Hull’s incumbent telecoms operator, KC, claims to have “completely eradicated” broadband “not spots” in its corner of Yorkshire (England). The development, which comes a full three years ahead of the UK government’s 2015 target, means that 100% should now be able to access download speeds of at least 2Mbps (Megabits per second).

The latest State of the Internet Q1 2012 report from content delivery firm Akamai has revealed that the average global internet download speed increased from 2.3Mbps in Q4-2011 to 2.6Mbps (Megabits\sec) at the end of the first quarter, while the average UK speed jumped from 4.9Mbps to 5.6Mbps (22nd fastest country) over the same period.

The Scottish Government has today announced the launch of a new £5 million Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative, which will apparently act as a “one-stop-shop” to provide rural community groups with “information” and “practical support” to help them find better internet access solutions.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today revealed that some 10% (2 million+) of the United Kingdom’s fixed line ISP subscribers were connected via a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) service at the start of July 2012, which leaves 16.3 million on standard broadband products with sub-25Mbps speeds (total 21.3 million). But problems remain.

National UK cable operator Virgin Media has cut the price of their superfast broadband bundles by adding a £25 credit to dual-play (broadband and phone) packages and £50 credit on triple-play “Collections” (broadband, phone and tv). This also combines with their various existing free installation and 6 months reduced price promotions.

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have shunned new advertising rules by unveiling its new Huawei E3231 USB Dongle (Modem), which its press release questionably claims can offer “super-fast” Mobile Broadband download speeds of up to 21.1Mbps using its latest HSPA+ (3G) technology.

The Managing Director of independent telecoms developer MS3 Communications, which is currently rolling out a new fibre optic based ultra-fast broadband network for businesses in Hull (Yorkshire, UK), has claimed that the local incumbent Telco, KC, now “see what we are doing as a genuine threat to them“.

Entanet, a UK voice and data communications provider, has called for the government to improve the country’s broadband infrastructure by fostering more “open access” to BT’s national telecoms network and offering community grants that would allow rural villages to choose the best internet access solution for their area.

The UK government’s communications minister, Ed Vaizey MP, has told the Open Rights Group (ORG) that “public intermediaries” (e.g. libraries and education networks) will “not be bound” by Ofcom’s Initial Obligations Code, which requires broadband ISPs to clamp down upon P2P internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Global connectivity provider iPass has today announced that its worldwide network of “premium” quality wireless internet hotspots (wifi) has reached the 1 million milestone, which is a massive rise from the 40,000 or so they had at the end of 2007.

Global Tier 1 network supplier Level 3 Communications has suggested that broadband subscribers in the UK should, if they want to help ISPs invest in and develop better superfast broadband infrastructure, be prepared to pay more for their internet usage. But ISPs must first be willing to make that change.
