Avanti Communications UK last night achieved a major victory after it confirmed the successful launch of a second Ka-band HYLAS (“Highly Adaptable“) broadband satellite (HYLAS 2) into space and orbit around the Earth.

The Information Society Alliance (EURIM), a not-for-profit policy studies group, has today re-launched itself as the Digital Policy Alliance (DPA) and immediately started calling for the UK government to review its “failed” national broadband strategy.

Telecoms operator BT has today announced the completion of its plan to deploy 500,000 wireless hotspots (wifi), each offering internet access across Greater London, for the 2012 Olympic Games. The move was made possible after the operator added a batch of new hotspots along 27 miles of the River Thames.

Fixed wireless ISP Diamond Net has started the introduction of its new “ultra fast” 4G based broadband service for the public sector, businesses and potentially up to 10,000 homes of North Lincolnshire Homes (NLH), a registered social landlord (charity), in the Scunthorpe area of North Lincolnshire.

The latest batch of anecdotal UK consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the past month of July 2012, reveals that the average internet download speed has declined slightly from 17.662Mbps (Megabits per second) in June 2012 to 17.262Mbps now.

The Court of Appeal has largely rejected BT’s latest attempt to appeal two judgments of the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) from June 2010 and March 2011, which challenged an Ofcom ruling that found the operator had charged rival ISPs too much for access to its network (i.e. Partial Private Circuits – trunk segments market).

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has quietly launched a new Alternative Broadband Pilot scheme, which borrows an idea from Wales by offering grants worth up to £300 to help “Not Spot” homes in rural areas install an “alternative” broadband service that can provide broadband speeds of more than 2Mbps+.

Consultancy firm Analysys Mason has warned that yesterdays scathing House of Lords Select Committee report into the UK’s embattled superfast broadband strategy, which proposed to blanket the country with truly open-access fibre optic hubs, would require “substantially more public funding” (£1bn) than is currently available.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has told ISPreview.co.uk that it will launch a 200Mbps or faster (i.e. 400Mbps) broadband product only “when we think the time is right” (e.g. when consumers demand it), which is despite four years ago setting itself a launch target of 2012. So when will the time be right?

The House of Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK government’s superfast broadband plan has published its first report, which criticises the lack of “strategy” and failure to focus upon “eliminating” the rural digital divide. Crucially it calls for the roll-out of a “robust and resilient national network” that should be linked primarily by open access fibre optic lines; but only if home owners pay for it first.

Early indications suggest that the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony and weekend events failed to put any real strain upon national UK broadband providers. Several ISPs reported increased internet usage, yet none suffered any serious problems. But the first real test could come today.

Broadband ISP PlusNet UK has revealed that internet streaming services (e.g. YouTube) now account for over 42% of all usage on its network during the evening and often peak at 50-60% depending on what’s happening (i.e. big sporting events). A raft of other stats have also been published including some that hint at a possible abuse of the SkyGo service.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has released its latest results to 30th June (Q2), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base saw a shock fall to total 602,000 (-15,800 in the quarter). That’s a nosedive from the -2,500 lost in Q1-2012 and the -5,000 lost during Q4-2011.
