Residents living in the small North Yorkshire (England) fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay can now access broadband internet download speeds of around 10-12Mbps (Megabits per second). This is thanks to the launch of a community wifi network (The Bay Broadband Co-operative) that has been upgraded with help from NYnet and Defra’s Rural Development Programme (RDPE).

Global satellite operator SES ASTRA has tipped BSkyB (Sky Broadband) to be one of the first in the world to deploy the next generation of Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) services (aka – 3840×2160 pixels or “4K” / 7680×4320 pixels or “8K“) into homes, possibly by 2015, which could call into question the future competitiveness of over-the-top (OTT) style broadband TV (IPTV).

The results from 728 respondents to our latest monthly survey has revealed that the majority (83.9%) are against proposals designed to force home broadband ISPs into imposing mandatory adult website blocks by default. The introduction of such a system, which could be applied to all internet accounts in the UK, was recommended by the recent Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection (Claire Perry MP).

Business focused ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today provided some of the first real customer feedback from its closed technical trial of BT’s latest ‘up to’ 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology, which saw one user receive actual internet download speeds of 192.39Mbps (Megabits per second) with 28.53Mbps upload and just 6ms latency.

The latest market forecast from telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has predicted that the UK will be home to a total of 25.9 million broadband ISP lines by the end of 2016 (currently 20,736,500), with 10.8 million coming from superfast “FTTx” (fibre optic) connections (“28 times the total FTTx lines recorded for Q4 2011“).

The recent Mobile Internet Censorship Report from the Open Rights Group (ORG), which revealed some of the legitimate websites that often get incorrectly blocked by adult content filters (over-blocking) on UK mobile networks, has triggered a rush of 19 new reports including a major technology news site (GigaOM), a style and fashion magazine, the BNP website (political party) and more.

The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA UK) has officially revealed the finalists for its 14th annual 2012 internet industry awards, which this year includes a new ‘Customer Choice‘ category (voted for by customers) alongside the usual ‘Best Consumer Fixed Broadband‘ ISP sections. This year’s highlight is PlusNet with a total of five nominations.

Business ISP Fluidata has today announced the launch of its new PureFluid PULSE service, which effectively bonds (line-bonding) up to three 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based broadband connections to deliver a maximum internet download speed of up to 200Mbps (60Mbps upload).

KC (Karoo), the incumbent internet and phone provider for Hull and East Riding in Yorkshire (UK), has today launched a new KC Connect service that offers to send out an engineer to help owners of the latest Smart TV’s connect them to the internet. KC has also promised to double the usage allowance of any broadband customers who take the service.

The financially scarred Digital Region project, which was built with £100m of public subsidy to help 80% of premises in South Yorkshire (UK) gain access to superfast broadband ISP services and act as an alternative wholesale supplier to BT, has effectively put up the FOR SALE sign (tender) in the hope of finding a new partner.

The governments Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has confirmed that around 2 million UK households could have problems viewing Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) services because of interference caused by a new generation of “4G” superfast Mobile Broadband services operating in the soon-to-be-auctioned 800MHz (790-862MHz) radio spectrum band.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk (AOL UK) has today released its latest results to 31st March 2012 (Q4), which saw their broadband subscriber base decline by -13,000 in the quarter to reach a new total of 4,066,000. That’s a significant improvement on the -43,000 lost during the previous Q4-2011. The ISP also revealed growth in its new superfast broadband service.

Communications and networking provider Entanet has described the UK governments move to resuscitate and expand controversial internet snooping laws (data retention), which threaten to log a much bigger slice of your online activity (e.g. Skype and Facebook access etc.), as “pointless” and warned that the “true criminals will simply circumnavigate such surveillance“.

BT has pledged to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP speeds of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) available to over 90% of Rutland’s (England, UK) 17,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2013. The plan was announced today during a contract signing event between BT and Rutland County Council (RCC), which was held at the historic Oakham Castle.

A group of Japanese scientists working out of the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) have managed to push wireless (wifi) data rates of between 2-3Gbps (Gigabits per second) over the unregulated T-rays band of the electromagnetic radio spectrum (300-3000GHz).

The governments Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest Internet Access Quarterly Update (Q1-2012), which found that a total of 42.16 million UK adults have gone online (83.7% of the population, up from 83.5% in Q4-2011 and 82.9% in Q3-2011). As a result the number of adults who have never used the internet declined to 8.12 million (16.1%).

Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) recently reported its latest financial results to 31st March 2012 (Q1), which revealed that their total base of fixed line Home Broadband subscribers has remained static (no growth or decline), for a third consecutive quarter, at 713,000.
