It’s been a long time coming but Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has finally signed its “most ambitious” contract worth £146 million with BT, which will make superfast broadband (FTTC/P) ISP services available to 84% of premises in the Highlands and Islands by the end of 2016.

Ofcom has confirmed that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the UK will soon be able to boost their Mobile Broadband network capacity, speeds, coverage and reliability by trading radio spectrum in the recently auctioned 4G (LTE) frequency bands of 800MHz and 2.6GHz.

BT, Virgin Media and other ISPs have officially started blocking their broadband customers from being able to access three websites – Fenopy, H33t and Kickass Torrents – that were last month found by London’s High Court to be facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has today signed a state aid supported £13.8m contract with BT to make super-fast broadband (24Mbps+) ISP connectivity available to “at least” 90% of all local premises by the end of 2015 (i.e. around 57,000 homes and businesses in the county).

Mobile operator EE has today announced the launch of both a 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless and mobile broadband network to serve rural homes and businesses in the Northern Fells area of Cumbria (England), which should receive average internet speeds of between 8-12Mbps (Megabits).

Ofcom has warned that a delay with moving Customer Side Records (CSR) to separated computer systems means that BT is now in breach of its 2005 Undertakings, which committed the operator to a “functional separation” of systems and processes to support the development of “effective competition” in the UK telecoms market.
