Despite concerns the Isle of Wight Council (IWC) in Southern England has now voted to approve BT as the “preferred supplier” for their local £7.6 million rollout of superfast broadband (FTTC/P), which should bring better Internet access to areas that have suffered due to a lack of investment.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV and website advert for BT’s superfast broadband BTInfinity (FTTC) service after they both made misleading claims about being able to offer “eight times faster fibre optic broadband” and “up to 8x faster than the UK average” speeds respectively.

A new research paper has warned that the UK’s controversial anti-piracy tackling Digital Economy Act (DEAct), which aims to slash Internet piracy by adopting a “three-strikes” style graduated response system of warning letters and punishment for repeat offenders (e.g. suspension of your broadband service), will not succeed in reducing copyright infringement.

Nominet, which manages the registry of .uk Internet domain names, has at the behest of the government launched a review of its registration policy for new website domain names that will examine whether or not it should ban certain words and expressions (e.g. swearing).

Cable operator Virgin Media has today become the first UK Pay-TV provider to reach an agreement to offer the Netflix unlimited movie streaming service via its TiVo based broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD / IPTV) platform, which will begin this week with a pilot of the app in 40,000 homes.

A new scheme called Connecting Cheshire Superfast Business, which is supported by £1.5m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Connecting Cheshire, has been launched to help over 900 small and medium-sized businesses across Cheshire and Warrington (England) make the most of superfast broadband.

London-based ISP Hyperoptic has confirmed that they still expect to start deployment of a “hyper-sonic” 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTH/B) service as many as 10 new UK cities by the end of 2013  2014 when they hope to reach 80,000 homes.

The West Yorkshire (England) local authorities have today agreed to a new £21.96 million state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contract with BT, which will make the operators “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 97% of local premises by the end of Autumn 2015 (the last 3% will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

The CEO of Business ISP XLN Telecom, Christian Nellemann, has said that the national rollout of superfast broadband technology is “crucial” to the United Kingdom’s small and medium sized businesses but called for the government to stop helping BT “maintain a monopoly on fibre services“.

Mobile provider EE UK has today reported passing a major milestone after they successfully added 1 Million customers to their superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network, which is claimed to be “one of the fastest 4G adoption rates in the world“.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk survey of 1,241 internet users in the United Kingdom has revealed that 51.9% of respondents consumed more than 60GB (GigaBytes) of data over their broadband ISP connections each month, which is up from 37.6% two years earlier (here). Equally impressive is the growing amount of time that we all spend online.

Telecoms provider EE has taken a leaf of their rivals book and added a £25 M&S voucher to any online orders of their cheap fixed line home broadband and superfast “fibre broadband” packages, which are currently being offered at half price for between the first 12 and 3 months of service.

Budget Internet provider TalkTalk has today followed the other big broadband ISPs by increasing the advertised download speed (“typical speed“) of their standard (ADSL2+) based packages “up to” 16Mbps (Megabits per second) from 14Mbps. But don’t expect to get faster speeds.

BTOpenreach has confirmed that they’re considering the launch of a new special offer that would cut the price of existing superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) installations for ISPs and their end-users, albeit only at specific BT telephone exchanges.

BTOpenreach, which among other things works to maintain and upgrade BT’s national UK telecoms network, has confirmed Sky Broadband as the country’s first ISP to begin trialling a new and possibly cheaper wires only (self-install) variant of its up to 80Mbps capable FTTC superfast broadband technology (i.e. no home engineer visit required).
