In an unexpected move the budget ISP Direct Save Telecom has today announced the launch of a new “low-cost unlimited high-speed” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband service for new builds in the United Kingdom, with prices starting from just £4.95 per month. But details appear to be in short supply.

People travelling on the South West Trains service in England, specifically those who use the main line route from London Waterloo to Weymouth and Portsmouth, will from today be able to make use of a new on-board FREE wireless Internet (WiFi Hotspot) service, just so long as it’s one of the operators Class 444 Desiro electric trains.

The Middlesbrough Council in North East England has this week approved additional funding of £493k, which will be used to help make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services available to 95% of people by 2017 (including an additional 500 local businesses). But the funding represents less than half what was actually made available.

The Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which is a community owned co-operative that aims to construct a new superfast broadband (30-100Mbps capable) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in rural parts of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England), has confirmed that the construction phase will begin on Monday 5th October 2014.

Customer of Virgin Media’s mobile division (Virgin Mobile) have, over the past couple of weeks, apparently been sent defective SIM cards that resulted in slow Internet (Mobile Broadband) speeds and or a complete loss of related connectivity. Existing customers are also experiencing problems with data performance.

Gigaclear, which specialises in rolling out true 1000Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband services to rural communities across the United Kingdom, looks set to float its way onto the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in order to initially raise an additional £20m to help fund an even more aggressive expansion strategy.
