Residents of Llanidloes in Powys (Wales), which is a small town that’s home to around 3,000 people, can now benefit after local ISP PCQ Solutions made a free public WiFi hotspot service available in the area and it could soon arrive in similarly sized towns across the United Kingdom.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson (Conservative), will today meet some of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs and mobile operators (including Virgin Media, BT and O2 UK) at a ‘Connectivity Summit’ where it’s hoped that a strategy can be devised to help improve the city’s superfast broadband connectivity.

Virgin Media has today confirmed our report from last month and said they’re teaming-up with the John Henry Group to trial a new fibre optic based narrow-trenching deployment technology in the large village of Papworth Everard, which resides near the city of Cambridge (England). Locals can expect to receive download speeds of up to 1000Mbps.

The Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton) in England’s West Midlands has, after sitting out the first round of funding from the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, finally agreed a £7.5m project to make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 95% of local premises by 2017.

South Yorkshire ISP Origin Broadband has attempted to move on from last month’s customer support and connectivity troubles (here), which related to the closure of Digital Region’s (DRL) local network, by officially launching their new services and offering free unlimited broadband to “everyone within reach of our network who takes line rental“.
