Someset and Devon UK Councils Angry at BT’s Fibre Broadband Rollout

Plans to extend the joint £94 million Connecting Devon and Somerset (England) project have been cast into doubt again after several district councils expressed concern at BT’s requirement that they sign “gagging orders” (Non-Disclosure Agreements) and the operators alleged inability to guarantee that residents in their area would receive access to faster broadband speeds.

Virgin Media Expands Cable Broadband Network in North East England

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced the second expansion of their broadband, phone and TV network since the summer, with 5,000 homes in the North East of England being added to their list for 2014. Most of the work will take place in Hartlepool, Darlington, Sunderland and Stockton-On-Tees.

The latest research from Point Topic and Adroit Economics has suggested that SME businesses could benefit to the tune of 40bn Euros (£32bn+ Gross Value Added) by 2020 thanks to the roll-out of “superfast broadband” services, with firms in the United Kingdom predicted to be one of the top three performers with GVA of 6bn+ Euros (£4.75bn+). But before too long businesses may be asking for 250Mbps+.

BT Openreach Recruit 500 Extra UK Telecoms Engineers to Improve Service

BTOpenreach has announced its intention to recruit another 500 full-time broadband and telephone engineers, mostly in London, Surrey (England), Aberdeen (Scotland) and more generally around Wales. The move forms part of BT’s on-going efforts to meet Ofcom’s new quality of service requirements (faster fault fixing and installations etc.).

UK High Court Forces Big ISPs to Block Websites for Trade Mark Abuse

The High Court of Justice in London has today ruled on a case that concerned the abuse of commercial Trade Marks. Crucially the outcome means that several of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband ISPs (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, EE and TalkTalk) can now also be forced to block websites that abuse company trademarks / logos, such as by dealing in counterfeit goods.

A new study of 8,556 employed adults across 25 countries, which was conducted by the Canadian division of online travel giant Expedia, has found that travellers increasingly prioritise WiFi accessibility. Some 56% of travellers worldwide said that WiFi availability and pricing impact their purchasing decision when booking travel or hotels.
