BT has successfully deployed a “free and unlimited” public WiFi wireless Internet hotspot service in the heart of Carlisle (i.e. most of the city centre and Longtown) in Cumbria (England), which will be extended to include Brampton later this month.

The £410 million Digital Scotland project has confirmed that 150,000 additional homes and businesses across the country can now gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network thanks to the state aid supported scheme, which aims to cover 85% of Scottish premises by the end of 2015 and 95% by the end of 2017.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the hilltop market town of Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire (England) has officially become the first of 30 initial rural communities to receive 3G based mobile coverage via their new Rural Open Sure Signal Programme, with many more soon to follow.

As predicted last month the consumer division of BT has today announced the launch of a new package that bundles the ISP’s BTInfinity 1 (FTTC) superfast broadband connectivity with their YouView product (TV Starter Pack) and access to Netflix all integrated into a single bill from £5.99 per month (first 6 months).

Slough-based Airwave, which in June 2014 was selected as one of eight pilot projects for the Government’s £10m Innovation Fund (part of the national Broadband Delivery UK scheme), has announced that the rural village of West Witton (Wensleydale, England) will be among the first to benefit from their new Fixed Wireless Access technology trials.

Cable operator Virgin Media has issued a brief apology after an unspecified number of their customers suffered problems accessing websites due to a fault with the ISPs Web Safe (Parental Control) service, which uses network-level filtering to block “potentially age-inappropriate websites” from the eyes of children.

It’s been three years since Hyperoptic stepped out from the ashes of BE Broadband to became one of the first ISPs to build an ultrafast (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTP) broadband network for homes in London. Price conscious ISP Direct Save Telecom has announced the opening of a new office in Birmingham (situated in the city-centre McLaren Building), which by summer 2015 will have created 150 new jobs in the area and should also help to improve the providers customer sales and support quality.
