The European Commission has today announced a new £250 billion (€315bn) plan to improve its infrastructure, which is designed to make the continent more attractive for investment, remove regulatory bottlenecks and “get Europe growing again” by funding improvements in broadband networks, transport, education, research and innovation.

A Digital Government Review conducted for the British Labour party, which was commissioned by Chi Onwurah MP but claims to be independent, has called for a future Labour Government to consider implementing a Universal Service Obligation (USO) for Internet access (potentially applying to both fixed line and mobile operators).

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has put their weight behind the Government’s proposal to tackle partial mobile not-spots across the United Kingdom by requiring major mobile network operators to adopt a controversial national roaming policy, which some fear could also stifle future investment.

In case you hadn’t realised it, the Black Friday Sales phenomenon has over the past few years been imported from the USA and is now hitting UK shores. Naturally ISPs are getting in on the action and so BT has put their Totally Unlimited Broadband (ADSL2+ and FTTC / BTInfinity) packages on a special discount.

The IT services provider and fibre optic builder, ITS Technology, has gobbled yet another Internet provider and this time it’s Wales focused fixed wireless broadband ISP Xwavia, which serves a number of remote rural communities (e.g. Conwy) with superfast Internet speeds.

Mobile operator EE has teamed up with the Radio 1 DJs and YouTubers Dan and Phil to offer customers a special “No strings, No contract” 4G Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) SIM that comes with 100GB (GigaBytes) of free Mobile Broadband data for use each month (details here), although naturally there is a catch or two.

Budget ISP Fuel Broadband (formerly Primus Saver) has announced the launch of a new promotion that offers one full year’s worth of free unlimited broadband (up to 16Mbps) to customers who also bundle in their phone line rental for £15 per month.

Residents of a well sized rural village in Monmouthshire (Wales) called Shirenewton could soon be able to benefit from a superfast fibre optic connection via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, which is being rolled out by Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet.

Mobile operator Lycamobile UK appears to have become a serial offender after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned, for a third time no less, a “misleading” promotion on their website that claimed to offer “UNLIMITED DATA NOW WITH 4G” when in fact the data usage was effectively capped to just 5GB (GigaBytes).
