A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again ruled that it’s perfectly fine for ISPs to describe hybrid-fibre broadband connections, such as those based off BT’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology, to describe such services as “fibre optic” even though they can also involve a significant amount of slower copper cable.

Existing customers of Sky’s TV packages are being offered an extra incentive to take out the operator’s Sky Broadband Unlimited and phone package, with subscribers being allowed the option to “test drive” / “Try Before You Buy” the service free for the first 3 months of service.

The cable laying ship Rene Descartes (Orange Marine), which almost two months ago lost a 8 tonne submersible plough (“Elodie“) worth £3.6m that was being used to deploy 20 new BT submarine fibre optic cables around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region, has now fully recovered its hardware.

The Court of Appeal has this morning ruled that two patents owned by California-based ISP ASSIA, which relates to the field of Dynamic Spectrum Management, have been infringed upon by BT’s Next Generation Access (NGA) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / BTInfinity) superfast broadband technology.

The ITS Technology Group will soon deploy a new superfast fixed wireless broadband service to cover businesses on Derby’s (East Midlands, England) Pride Park, which can be found on the outskirts of the city centre (former industrial land between the River Derwent and railway lines).

The Cotswolds Broadband project, which has long planned to roll-out an open access 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to the majority of homes and businesses in West Oxfordshire (Chipping Norton), has now secured £6.8m in funding and is preparing to issue its Invitation To Tender for a supplier.

In an unexpected move Virgin Media has today announced a new partnership deal with The Cloud, which is owned by rival BSkyB (Sky Broadband), that allows the national cable operator access to 22,000 additional premium public WiFi hotspots across the United Kingdom.

Customers of the Post Office’s phone service will be displeased to learn that the operator will be raising the price of their Home Phone line rental from £13 to £15 a month from 5th January 2014 2015, although it’s not all bad news because they’ve tweaked the price of their broadband services downwards to compensate.

Fibre optic developer Vtesse Networks, which was only last month gobbled up by Interoute Communications, has lost its appeal at the General Court of the European Union, which challenged the decision to award state aid to BT for its deployment of superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (England).

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).

South Yorkshire ISP Origin Broadband has announced a new deal for Christmas that brings the cost of pre-paid Phone Line Rental down to the equivalent of just £8.33 inc. VAT per month for customers across the United Kingdom, which is significantly cheaper than most rival pre-paid line rental offers.

BT has successfully deployed a “free and unlimited” public WiFi wireless Internet hotspot service in the heart of Carlisle (i.e. most of the city centre and Longtown) in Cumbria (England), which will be extended to include Brampton later this month.

The £410 million Digital Scotland project has confirmed that 150,000 additional homes and businesses across the country can now gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network thanks to the state aid supported scheme, which aims to cover 85% of Scottish premises by the end of 2015 and 95% by the end of 2017.
