Hyperoptic Study Claims 39 Percent of Brits Try to “Steal” Neighbours WiFi

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has conducted a new study of 2,000 British adults that attempts to collate the sometimes poor performance of standard home broadband connections with the finding that 39% of respondents admitted to using their neighbours’ Internet connection by “stealing” their WiFi, which might be partly out of frustration with their own slow connections.

RSA Says “No Reason” UK Cities Should Not Aim for 1Gbps Broadband

In its final report the RSA’s City Growth Commission, which has been looking at ways of boosting the United Kingdom’s long-term economic prospects, has today recommended that the Government attempt to “emulate” Singapore by aiming for ultrafast broadband speeds of 1Gbps [1000 Megabits] “in the near future” across our cities.

Staffordshire’s BDUK and BT Superfast Broadband Rollout Progressing

The £27.35 million Superfast Staffordshire project in the West Midlands (England) has now helped around 13,000 local homes and businesses (mostly in Rugeley) to gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and its future deployment focus is now slowly switching towards the sensitive rural Moorlands (e.g. Peak District).

EE UK Home Broadband Customers Rise to 793K as 4G Tops 5.6m

Internet and mobile operator EE has today published their latest results for Q3-2014, which saw fixed line home broadband subscribers grow at a slightly slower pace to top 793,000 customers (up +18k in Q3, which is down from +30k in Q2 and level with +19k in Q1). Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.4 million to top 5.6m (roughly level with Q2 growth).

Virgin Media Expands Cable Broadband Network in North East England

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced the second expansion of their broadband, phone and TV network since the summer, with 5,000 homes in the North East of England being added to their list for 2014. Most of the work will take place in Hartlepool, Darlington, Sunderland and Stockton-On-Tees.

The latest research from Point Topic and Adroit Economics has suggested that SME businesses could benefit to the tune of 40bn Euros (£32bn+ Gross Value Added) by 2020 thanks to the roll-out of “superfast broadband” services, with firms in the United Kingdom predicted to be one of the top three performers with GVA of 6bn+ Euros (£4.75bn+). BT Openreach Recruit 500 Extra UK Telecoms Engineers to Improve Service

BTOpenreach has announced its intention to recruit another 500 full-time broadband and telephone engineers, mostly in London, Surrey (England), Aberdeen (Scotland) and more generally around Wales.
