In the not too distant future new customers who join Netflix in the hope of being able to watch the latest TV shows and some films in Ultra HD 4K (3840 x 2160 resolution) quality, via “superfast” broadband capable Internet connections, will be asked to pay several pounds extra.

Selkirk-based ISP TenTel, which recently entered the market with an aspiration to sign 20,000 customers in its first year of trading and 100,000 within five years, has moved to take on the big boys by claiming to offer the United Kingdom’s “cheapest telephone and broadband deals” and they’re starting by offering phone line rental from just £7.99 per month.

Customers of the BT TV (IPTV) service, specifically those with legacy BTVision+ set-top-boxes, will from 20th October 2014 no longer be able to access the operators BTSport channels via the encrypted digital terrestrial transmission using a supplied viewing card. But there is a small caveat.

The West Sussex Better Connected project in England, which is working to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to around 98% of local homes and businesses by Spring 2016 (note: 90% will get “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+), has announced the next set of Phase Three roll-out areas.

As expected Sky Broadband has started warning customers that the price they pay for phone line rental on their broadband bundles, which is currently set at £15.40 per month, is set to rise just like BT’s will on 1st December 2014.

The communications regulator has today issued a brief update covering the on-going trials of White Space (IEEE 802.22) wireless technology, which among other things can intelligently harness the unused spectrum gaps that exist between Digital Terrestrial TV (DTV) channels in order to deliver broadband services over a wide area.

UK ISP PlusNet Business has slashed the cost of their ‘up to’ 18Mbps capable standard unlimited broadband and phone bundle to just £2.50 +vat per month for the first 12 months of service (£13 thereafter), with line rental being added on top at £10.50 per month (standard payg call charges apply).

Cable telecoms and TV giant Virgin Media has launched a new promotion on their “Big Connection” bundle, which offers 50Mbps broadband for just £4 per month for the first 8 months of service (£15.50 thereafter).

UK Broadband Ltd (PCCW), which is the parent of London-based wireless broadband ISP Relish, has officially been granted an indefinite extension to its spectrum licence for use of 40MHz in the 3.4GHz band that is being used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless and mobile broadband services.

BT Business has today announced the launch of a new service for housing associations (i.e. council style homes for those on low incomes), which among other things will allow tenants to share Internet access in order to help reduce monthly rental costs.

On Tuesday next week the Suffolk County Council in England will vote to approve a new plan that aims to extend their existing £40m Better Broadband for Suffolk project and make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds available to 95% of the county, although it won’t complete until sometime in 2018 (later than the national target of 2017).

Residents and travellers who choose to make use of the swanky Marlin Apartments (Marlin) at three sites in London (Empire Square, Canary Wharf and Queen Street) can now gain access to broadband speeds of up to 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) thanks to Hyperoptic’s new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network.

The £23.5m Broadband Improvement Project for Northern Ireland, which aims to make faster BT based “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to an additional 45,000 premises by December 2015, it appears to be making some progress, with a new postcode checker being added and a general roll-out plan surfacing.

Owners of broadband routers made by Belkin, an American manufacturer of consumer electronics, recently found themselves unable to get online after a silly flaw in the kit meant that related customers couldn’t connect to the Internet because the device was unable to ping one of the manufacturers own remote “heartbeat” servers.

BT and Huawei have successfully harnessed a “record spectral efficiency” of 5.97bit/s/Hz in order to deliver super channel speeds of 3Tbps (Terabits per second) over an existing 359km long fibre optic link using commercial grade hardware and software in a real world environment.
