A new report from uSwitch, which is based on 1,896,977 consumer Internet speedtests conducted during the August 2013 to January 2014 period, claims to have revealed the slowest and fastest streets in the United Kingdom for broadband speed. But we wouldn’t rely on the results.

At the end of 2013 the average global broadband download speed, according to Akamai’s State of the Internet report, increased by 5.5% during the final quarter to top 3.8Mbps. By comparison the United Kingdom skipped from 14th to 13th fastest and saw its speed rise by 3.3% in the quarter to total 9.4Mbps.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a television advert for TalkTalk’s broadband TV (YouView) service after it failed to make clear that “some catch-up [TV] content is excluded from the on demand services“.

The £410 million Digital Scotland partnership with BT has, following Shetland Telecom’s local work and last year’s £26.9m deal to build 20 new fibre optic submarine cables around the Highlands and Islands (here), expanded its roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC) services to premises in Lerwick on Shetland.

Business ISP Entanet, which supplies wholesale Internet access and related communication services to a number of ISPs and businesses across the United Kingdom, has moved to boost sales by allowing their resellers to offer Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband connections with a free installation or migration.

Customers aren’t likely to notice much of a difference but the headline (advertised) download speed of Sky Broadband’s standard unlimited Internet access product has just been raised again from “up to” 16Mbps to 17Mbps, even though it’s still the same old ADSL2+ based connection underneath. No doubt more ISPs will soon follow.

The telecoms regulator has today published its latest biannual report into the real-world Internet speeds of fixed line broadband ISP consumers across the United Kingdom, which reveals that the average download rate has risen to 17.8Mbps (up by +17.41% from 14.7Mbps in August 2013). Sadly a huge gap still exists between urban and rural areas.

In a major development two of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have “joined forces” with fibre optic infrastructure developer CityFibre to expand its existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the City of York (England) by launching a 1000Mbps capable “ultra-fast” broadband service to thousands of local homes.
