The £16.26m Superfast Northamptonshire project in England, which aims to deliver “full countywide coverage by 2017 at next generation access speeds (30 mbps and above)“, has today begun its local roll-out of BT’s related “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network.

Mobile operators EE (T-Mobile and Orange UK) and Three UK have agreed to expand their 50/50 network sharing deal, through the umbrella organisation called Mobile-Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), with an extra investment of £1 billion to improve 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage and cut costs.

The Scottish Government’s “Cyber Integrator” (cybercrime tzar), Keith McDevitt, has warned home owners to close their open wifi networks (wireless) after finding that an increasing number of cyber criminals, such as Internet paedophiles, were using them to commit offences that ISPs often trace back to innocent broadband users.

Germany-based networking kit manufacturer AVM, which are best known for their series of advanced and absurdly feature rich FRITZ!Box broadband ISP routers, has improved upon their existing line-up by launching the FRITZ!Box 7490. The major change over their previous 7390 is the addition of 1.3Gbps capable 802.11ac WiFi technology.

Customers of Virgin Media’s (Liberty Global) national UK cable network can expect to start receiving a significant broadband download speed boost, at no extra cost, when the operator this month begins rolling out its latest network upgrades and pushes their top package speeds up to 152Mbps (Megabits per second).

It took a few months but mobile operator Vodafone has finally passed Ofcom’s coverage obligation for 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage, which requires all of the markets major MNOs to provide related network coverage in the 2100MHz band to at least 90% of the UK population.

Residents of Aurora Springs, a new homes development in South Gloucestershire (England) that forms part of the wider Cheswick “Urban Village Concept” near Bristol, have complained to BT and the city council because their “village of the future” suffers from slow broadband access and some even have no access to a phone service.

The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England, which is investing £94 million to help make BT’s superfast broadband FTTC/P (25Mbps+) services available to “around” 90% of local premises by the end of 2016 (here), has today pushed aside the floods and announced another new batch of local upgrades.

CityFibre has today begun canvassing businesses in the city of Peterborough (East of England), with the hope that they will want to join its new “Gig Up” campaign by registering their interest in connecting via the new urban fibre optic network (aka – Peterborough CORE).

Customers of Zen Internet’s legacy superfast “Fibre Optic Broadband” (FTTC) packages, such as their old Fibre Lite and Fibre Active products, will receive a significant increase to their existing monthly usage (download) allowances from 1st February 2014.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has reduced the contract length of their broadband and phone bundles from 18 to 12 months, while also continuing to offer their “RED HOT SALE” discount that reduces the prices by almost half for the first six months of service (note: Line Rental is still payable at £15.99 a month or the equivalent of £10.66 when pre-paid).

It’s been a difficult few months for BSkyB (Sky Broadband) but the operators latest Q4 2013 results have revealed that their broadband ISP subscriber base continued to grow by +110,000 in Q4 to total 5,127,000 (stable from +111k added in Q3). Churn also fell and ARPU grew but their unbundled (LLU) network expansion stopped.

One of the UK Government’s strongest advocates of mandatory network-level Internet filtering, MP Claire Perry, has told a Westminster eForum that modern ISP censorship systems are “far better, far stronger, much more effective and will not overblock” websites (i.e. wrongful blocking). Even though they do.. quite a lot.
