After just three weeks of deployment Gigaclear has today confirmed that the first property (a house in the Ongar village of Bobbingworth) on their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Epping Forest area of Essex (England) is now connected.

Sky Broadband informs that they will today launch a Christmas and New Year offer on their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband package, which will make the service free for the first 12 months (£10 a month thereafter) and they’re also throwing in a £50 M&S e-voucher. Elsewhere Sky Fibre (up to 38Mbps) is also being cut to just £5 per month.

A new report from Ofcom has revealed that the vast majority of fixed line home broadband ISP subscribers have, after being given an “enforced” choice, chosen not to implement their provider’s network-level filtering (Parental Controls), which are designed to block adult websites (porn etc.).

In a surprise move BTOpenreach has today unveiled a new middle tier bandwidth product for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “fibre broadband” services, which offers download speeds of up to 55Mbps and uploads of 10Mbps.

Akamai has released their latest State of the Internet Q3 2015 (SotI) report, which states that the world’s average fixed line broadband download speed is 5.1Mbps (unchanged from Q2), which compares with 13Mbps in the United Kingdom (up from 11.8Mbps). Elsewhere the UK’s overall country ranking has rebounded from 19th to 14th.
