The Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs, Nick Herbert, has today added his voice to the calls for a radical shake-up of the United Kingdom’s telecoms and broadband market, one that could see investment in true fibre optic (FTTH/P) infrastructure and the break-up of BT (Openreach).

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has today published its latest report into the Government’s (DEFRA) performance, which among other things warns that the on-going “absence of effective internet and mobile connectivity” is hampering economic growth in some rural areas.

Financial analyst firm Redburn has published a new piece of research that offers some extra cost predictions for BT’s forthcoming roll-out of 500Mbps G.fast broadband tech and also warns that the merger with EE could help create a £500m+ risk to Openreach’s cash flow.

Last month the Government confirmed that their Broadband Delivery UK project with BT had so far managed to extend superfast (24Mbps+) capable “fibre broadband” services to 3,311,843 extra premises and today we’ve also got the latest consumer take-up figures for each local authority.

BTOpenreach has today formally confirmed that the ‘Basic Engineer’ and also ‘Managed Engineer’ Installation options for their ‘up to’ 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband lines, specifically those installs that included a simple VDSL Modem (pictured), will be withdrawn from 31st March 2016.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project with BT has today announced that their ultrafast 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has been made available to premises in the village of Nasareth (Gwynedd). The one in Wales, of course, and NOT the childhood home of Jesus.

The Board of the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) have agreed to work in partnership with the Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative in order to setup a community organisation, which aims to deliver faster broadband services to around 1,000 premises in the region’s remotest areas.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve found financing of £180m to help expand and commercialise their national UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband / Ethernet network and one of their first moves is to gobble KCOM Group’s UK network assets for £90m.

Reports claim that Virgin Media has scaled back its urban superfast broadband (EuroDOCSIS3 cable) roll-out plans for North Swindon (Wiltshire, England) because of the local authority’s £1.9m contract with UKB Networks, which is deploying a fixed wireless service in the area.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their £3bn “Project Lightning” network expansion will use a mix of pure “Fibre to the Home” (FTTH/P) and DOCSIS technology to bring “ultrafast” broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps to 16,000 premises across six large villages in Leicestershire (England).

Mobile operator EE, which is on course to become part of BT, has today secured the sometimes controversial contract to deliver a new communications network for Britain’s Emergency Services (Police, Fire / Rescue and Ambulance) by using their new 4G (LTE) infrastructure.
