The £1.56m state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK pilot of a new superfast fixed wireless broadband network, which was built by Airwave in North Yorkshire (England), appears to have run into an overbuilding conflict with BT’s (Openreach) roll-out of FTTC based “fibre broadband” services.

Customers of Sky Broadband and possibly a few other ISPs in the North of Scotland may be experiencing sporadic connectivity problems with their broadband and phone services today, which appears to have been caused by BTOpenreach’s “over-running network maintenance.”

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today confirmed that the South Yorkshire (England) cities and towns of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster will be the next to benefit from their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) style network.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has confirmed that an additional 360,000 homes and businesses in Scotland are set to benefit from their on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion by 2019. Elsewhere 19,000 have separately been confirmed for the roll-out in Cambridgeshire (England).

The European Commission has published a new Analysys Mason study that examines the cost of, among other things, providing 1Gbps capable fixed line broadband connections to all residential areas across the 28 EU member states, which for now still includes the United Kingdom.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has renewed their TV deal with Sky, which means that customers will continue to receive access to premium entertainment channels like Sky 1 and Sky Living, as well as live and on-demand content from Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and the pay-per-view Sky Box Office service.

The UK telecoms regulator has found “reasonable grounds for believing” that KCOM in East Yorkshire and Hull (England) “failed” to take sufficient measures to maintain uninterrupted telephone access to emergency services on 999 and 112 between 25th Feb 2009 to 28th Dec 2015.

A mix of support from the Superfast Dorset project and local ISP VoIP Unlimited has enabled the isolated village of Kimmeridge on the remote Dorset (England) coast, which previously struggled to get even 1Mbps via BT’s fixed lines, to build a new 50Mbps wireless broadband network.

Rural ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that their State Aid supported Fastershire Phase 2 roll-out of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband in Gloucestershire, which is focused upon the Cotswolds area, has now reached the half-way point with 3,000 premises passed.

Openreach (BT) will today make a small update to their ‘When can I get fibre?‘ broadband coverage checker, which should offer a bit of extra detail about the availability of “ultrafast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) technology. But the change will only work for locations in Wales.

Until the end of this month Plusnet are offering their ‘up to’ 76Mbps Unlimited Fibre Extra (FTTC) broadband service at just £5 a month for the first 6 months of service (£19.99 thereafter), although you still have to add £17.99 a month for line rental on top (or the equivalent of £15.49 when pre-paid).
