Thousands of extra homes in the county of Wiltshire (England) look set to benefit after the local authority awarded a total of £3 million in extra public funding to BT and Gigaclear, which are both tasked with expanding the reach of their 100Mbps+ capable “fibre broadband” networks into rural areas.

Ofcom has used crowd-sourced data collected from 4,288 users of their Smartphone app to reveal that 72% of users in UK urban areas were satisfied with their overall mobile service, although this falls to just 56% in rural areas. Elsewhere WiFi gave the best YouTube speed (average of 6.6Mbps).

The telecoms regulator has today hit mobile operator Three UK with a fine of £1,890,000 after its network was temporarily unable to provide customers in Kent, Hampshire and parts of London with access to the emergency services (police, fire etc.), which wasn’t helped by reliance on a single data centre.

The Labour Leader for North Swindon, Jim Grant, has called on the council to stop spending public money on the construction of a superfast (24Mbps+) fixed wireless broadband network from UKB Networks because it is now in “direct competition” with BT and Virgin Media’s new “fibre” networks.

From today anybody choosing to use their Mobile phone (SIM) to make calls, text or use data (Mobile Broadband) while roaming around the European Union should be able to do so for the same price as they pay their UK operator (i.e. no extra roaming charges), albeit with a few caveats for data.

The Government’s returning Digital Minister, Matthew Hancock MP, has today told the Connected Britain event in London that he will recommit to the current policy of fostering “full fibre” broadband and 5G mobile, which is despite the fact that a deal between the Conservative Party and DUP has yet to be signed.

The Scottish Government has today claimed that their £428m Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach) has successfully ensured that 750,000 extra Scottish homes and businesses can access a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) service, with “superfast” speeds covering “more than” 90% of the country.

The Welsh Government (WG) has launched a 30 day public consultation into their proposed £80 million plan to extend the roll-out “fast reliable broadband” (defined as 30Mbps+) to “every property” in Wales by 2020, which could see a further 98,145 premises being covered by the service.

ISPs Sky Broadband, Virgin Media and TalkTalk have succeeded in getting the Advertising Standards Agency to ban several adverts for BT’s Infinity SmartHub broadband router, which made “misleading” claims to offer the “UK’s most powerful wi-fi signal” and “better wi-fi coverage“.

Openreach (BT) is funding a new trial in Scotland that involves the deployment of a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to the tiny remote rural Caithness and Sutherland communities of Altnaharra (45 premises) and Skerray by Bettyhill (100 premises).

Mobile operator EE has come out on top in a new RootMetrics study of YouTube’s video streaming via 4G and 3G mobile networks in London, which rated all four primary mobile operators by several criteria (e.g. video resolution, time taken to start a video, playback freezes / buffering etc.).

The incumbent telecoms provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has improved their social access phone package (SAP) for low income households by introducing a price cap, which means that customers will never pay more than £10 per month for any voice calls made outside of their allowance.
