A new study from the UK telecoms regulator has found “no evidence” to support claims made by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), which had complained that Openreach’s (BT) VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband technology had “resulted in interference to radio reception.”

Telecoms giant BT has today published a new report that examines their environmental impact, which among other things reveals that their UK retail ISP division has refurbished 500,000+ HomeHub broadband routers over the past 18 months (these are used to replace any that customers return as faulty).

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,384 website readers has found that the vast majority of respondents do know how to use their broadband router’s admin interface (92.5%), although 25.9% have never changed the default Wi-Fi password and 23.9% haven’t changed their router’s admin password.

The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today warned the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, that there is a risk of “unintended consequences that could undermine our defences” if she forces through aggressive new measures to tackle online “extremism“.

Thousands of customers are at risk after Edinburgh-based broadband ISP TenTel, which at the end of last year boasted of “fantastic growth” and their success in securing a £500k investment (loan) from the Barclays (here), slipped into administration. TalkTalk will take on their customers.

Telecoms analysts have warned that periodic price hikes and a lack of innovation could be fuelling a slowdown in customer growth among many of the United Kingdom’s largest phone and broadband ISPs (e.g. BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk etc.), although the wider picture is more complicated.

Residents of two rural villages – Leck (Lancashire) and Ingleton (North Yorkshire) – were left without access to B4RN’s 1Gbps community built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network on Friday afternoon (2nd June @ around 4:30pm) after vandals dug up and cut one of their core cable ducts.

Mobile operator EE has introduced Welsh language customer service for people in Wales and confirmed that they intend to boost 4G geographic network coverage of Wales from 40% at the start of 2016 to 90% by the end of 2017 (overall UK coverage will reach 95% by the same date).

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Airband have put in an application for Code Powers from Ofcom, which could make it easier and cheaper for them to expand their rural focused network beyond existing coverage in the Midlands, South West and Wales.

UK ISP Hyperoptic has now expanded their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/P) network into the London borough of Croydon, with 20 large residential apartment buildings (Multi-Dwelling Units) being among the first to benefit and 10 more undergoing installation or being planned for the future.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that the first trial of their SOGEA based SOGFast service, which will allow UK consumers to order an “ultrafast broadband” (up to 330Mbps) standalone G.fast line without also needing to take a phone (voice) service, will begin in July 2017 and run until December 2017.

Sky Mobile (Sky Broadband) has today added a fourth option to their line-up of Mobile tariffs, which costs just £5 per month and includes a 500MB (MegaByte) data allowance. As usual existing Sky TV customers will also benefit from free unlimited UK calls and texts.

The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) has warned BT that it will “use all means up to and including industrial action” if the UK telecoms giant pushes forward with any plan to close the company’s “gold-plated” defined-benefits pension scheme, which could be suffering under a £14bn deficit.
