Internet provider TalkTalk appears to be making a more aggressive move to grab a bigger share of the premium Pay TV market today by reducing the price of their broadband based triple-play TV bundles and cutting the price of the Sky Sports and Sky Cinema add-ons by 75% and 50% respectively.

Openreach (BT) has today launched their consultation on the prospects for a “large-scale” roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) ultrafast broadband technology across the United Kingdom by around 2025, which in theory could see the operator’s “full fibre” network reach up to 10 million premises.

Some 5,000 extra homes and businesses in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth are next on the list for Virgin Media’s £3bn network expansion (Project Lightning), which aims to roll-out cable TV and broadband speeds of up to 350Mbps (300Mbps for residential customers) to the area.

The Government has confirmed that, from April 2018 onwards, they will require broadband ISPs to block access to pornographic websites that fail to introduce at least a Credit Card based Age Verification system. This is intended to stop children being able to access naughty images and videos.

The CEO of Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, appears to be closing in on a deal that could see the telecoms giant commit hundreds of millions of pounds to deploy the Government’s promised 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, but only if Ofcom softens their planned FTTC charge controls.

Urban fibre optic builder Cityfibre and local ISP partner Diva Telecom have praised the efforts of a rural community in the village of Eltofts, which helped to dig the trenches for a new 1Gbps fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network to connect local premises with the operator’s 117km network in Leeds.

Openreach has confirmed that their Phase 2 ISP trial of Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA), which allows consumers to buy a standalone “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) line without the voice (phone) service, is to be extended for a little longer past 17th July 2017.

Ofcom has started a new consultation that aims to find ways of improving consumer engagement and encouraging more switching in the Broadband, TV, Mobile and Phone market. But they’ve also given up on making it easier to switch between separate network platforms (e.g. Openreach, Virgin Media and KCOM).

Good news for consumers and ISPs alike. Openreach has today announced that the minimum contract term for their ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband service is to be cut from 12 months to just 1 month for all services!

Mobile operator EE has extended its partnership with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s by announcing a plan to setup 100 new “stores” (700 overall), which will foster some 400 new retail jobs by the end of 2019 and “provide 95% of people with access to an EE store within 20 minutes’ drive.”

Ultrafast “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear has won the final Lot 1 contract (Upper CDS) of the Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which will see £10.3m being invested to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) network to 6,500 rural premises around Bath and North Somerset.

Customers of the Sky owned NOW TV video streaming service will be hit by a price hike of 14.3% on 15th August 2017 when the monthly cost of the provider’s TV Entertainment Pass rises from £6.99 to £7.99. The good news is that NOW TV Combo (Broadband, Phone and TV) users aren’t affected.

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today made an additional 125MHz of radio spectrum available to WiFi networks (Wireless Local Area Networks – WLAN) by introducing support for the 5.8GHz (5725 – 5850MHz) radio spectrum sub-band to deliver faster speeds.

Earlier this year Ofcom reached a voluntary agreement over the “legal separation” of BT’s network access division (Openreach). Today the UK telecoms regulator has set out how they intend to monitor and enforce the changes, which will be conducted via a dedicated Openreach Monitoring Unit.
