Wireless infrastructure builder Arqiva has signed their 12th London Borough street furniture concession contract, which gives them exclusive access rights to street furniture across Lambeth. As a result around 15,000 lampposts can now be used to improve 4G Mobile network coverage.

A new study has used data collected by research group M-Lab to reveal that the United Kingdom delivers an average (mean) broadband download speed of just 16.51Mbps and ranks 31st fastest in the world versus 189 other countries. By comparison Singapore tops the chart with 55.13Mbps.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their Q2 2017 (calendar) results and reported a total UK broadband customer base of 5,028,300 (up by +30,900 in Q2 vs +80,700 in Q1), although their £3bn Project Lightning network expansion is still rebooting itself after recent troubles.

The administrators for Lincolnshire-based fixed wireless broadband ISP AB Internet, which in late May 2017 shocked customers by announcing that the company had gone into administration and was looking to sell itself as a “going concern” (here), have revealed details of the ISP’s debt pile and sale.

Last month Openreach (BT) launched a new consultation that hinted at a large-scale deployment of “full fibre” FTTP ultrafast broadband, which could cover up to 10 million premises by around 2025 (here). Today a leaked copy of that document has pegged the cost at between £3bn to £6bn.

The Government has today set out details of their new Data Protection Bill, which aims to give individuals more control over their data online by introducing a new “right to be forgotten” (i.e. asking for your personal data to be deleted) and enabling emails or files to be moved when switching ISP.

Some fibre optic broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe appear to be suffering from a shortage in supply of certain high capacity optical fibre cables from major European manufacturers, such as OFS and Tratos, which in some cases is causing huge delays.

The Newcastle City Council has today announced that Hyperoptic have been chosen to supply their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 25 of the local authority’s social housing developments. The roll-out is already underway.

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results for the first half of 2017 (here), which among other things reveals that their 3G and 4G indoor network coverage has now reached 97% (up from 81% in 2015) and 4G population coverage is at 91%.

Customers of Sky (Sky Broadband) in the UK are being invited to join their new Sky VIP loyalty scheme, which rewards them with special offers, prizes and event tickets depending upon what services they take and how long they’ve been a subscriber. It’s hoped the move will reduce churn.

Optical fibre ISP Hyperoptic, which is focused on connecting big residential and office buildings inside 28 large UK cities and towns, has launched a new range of 20Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps capable standalone FTTP/B broadband packages that are aimed squarely at connecting students.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their ultrafast broadband and TV network is being expanded to reach a further 50,000 homes and businesses in Northern Ireland, with the roll-out already started in Ballykelly, Bangor, Limavady, Newtownards, Strabane and Artigarvan.

The Post Office’s telecoms division has today announced that they’ve completed the acquisition of Fuel Broadband from previous owner New Call Telecom. Apparently the “seamless” migration progress concluded yesterday and 60,000 customers have now been moved.

Business ISP Cerberus Networks appears to have become one of the first providers in the United Kingdom to launch a “commercial” package using Openreach’s (BT) new 330Mbps G.fast “ultrafast broadband” technology and they’ve also introduced some “affordable” FTTP services.

The United Kingdom’s national cable operator, Virgin Media (Liberty Global), has today followed other ISPs by announcing a series of annual price hikes for their broadband, phone and / or TV bundles, which will see the price existing customers pay rising by around +4.7% per month.
