Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has today announced that they’ve reduce the price of their ‘up to’ 19Mbps (ADSL2+) capable “family premium” unlimited broadband packages and scrapped their 12 month contracts in favour of a short rolling 30 day term.

In a curious move Relish Wireless, which is a fixed wireless ISP in London and Swindon that was acquired by Three UK, has updated their website to offer a new range of “Home Fibre” broadband services that claim to offer a “full fibre experience” with ultrafast download speeds from 50Mbps to 1Gbps.

Two years ago the London Borough of Wandsworth announced that it had teamed-up with local ISP Community Fibre to roll-out a new 1000Mbps capable ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to 20,000 council homes. The provider has so far done 5,500 and the next areas are now being announced.

The Upottery Parish Councillor and Chairman of the B4RDS (Broadband for Rural Devon & Somerset) campaign, Graham Long, has criticised Devon Council for conducting scrutiny of the regional broadband roll-out project (Connecting Devon and Somerset) in private, with “press and public excluded“.

Cityfibre has today signed a new deal with Cheltenham-based ISP Bamboo, which will support the roll-out of their 500Mbps and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cater for businesses in the large town of Cheltenham and the city of Gloucester (Gloucestershire, England).

The Social Market Foundation, a non-partisan think tank, has warned that broadband and telephony remain “highly concentrated consumer markets” and a lack of effective competition can translate into higher prices, poorer services, less choice and possibly lower rates of investment or innovation.

Existing customers of BT’s 52Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) capable Infinity 1 (FTTC) “fibre broadband” service will be pleased to learn that the ISP has decided to reward them with a free speed boost ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) and a doubling of their cloud storage, but not everybody will benefit.

Cable network Virgin Media has today cut the prices of their 50Mbps to 300Mbps range of standalone broadband packages for the first 12 months of service (new customers). At the same time they’ve also increased the prices on some of their bundles (i.e. broadband, phone and /or TV).

Broadband ISP TalkTalk, which already blocks nuisance calls at the network level and recently enabled Caller Display + Last Call Barring for all users at no extra cost, has today launched a new phone security feature called ‘Check and Report‘ that helps customers to identify and stop unwanted calls.

Openreach’s (BT) roll-out of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech has been given a boost by their first co-investment deal with a major UK landowner (Grosvenor Britain & Ireland), which will see their network being expanded across the firm’s London estate (130 sites).

Cityfibre has published their latest results for the six months to 30th June 2017 (H1), which reveals that they now have 4,235 connected customer premises on their UK “full fibre” FTTP network (up from 3,962 in H2 2016) and a total of 3,556 route kilometres of operational ducted fibre (up from 3,383km).

City-centric fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has signed a new deal that will see their 1Gbps broadband network (FTTP/B) being extended to cater for SACO’s stock of serviced apartments across the United Kingdom, which exist in many of the same urban areas as the operator’s existing network.

The Director of Halls, Shaun Jones (Chartered Surveyor), has claimed the contracts that landowners in Shropshire are being asked to sign with wireless ISP Airband, which won the deal to roll-out a 30Mbps+ broadband network to 14,000 premises, leave “too much scope for future problems.”

Broadband providers Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have today been praised by Ofcom’s Q2 2017 UK consumer complaints report after they received fewer gripes than any other ISP for their service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for BT and TalkTalk, which attracted the most complaints.

The European Union’s move in June 2017 to scrap roaming charges for mobile calls, texts and data / internet services (here) has resulted in operators’ reporting a huge rise in data traffic due to travellers, which has multiplied by between 3-6 times this summer compared with last year.

The European Commission has published a new study from IHS Markit and Point Topic, which summarises the current state of broadband coverage across Europe and measures how close the EU is to achieving their Digital Agenda goals (i.e. 30Mbps for all, with 50% subscribed to 100Mbps+ by 2020).
