The telecoms regulator has today given Inmarsat‘s plan to improve broadband connectivity on-board aircraft a boost by granting them a wireless telegraphy licence for ground based stations using the 2GHz band, which forms part of its Satellite based European Aviation Network (EAN).

East Yorkshire ISP KCOM has today announced the final 2017 phase of their £60m Lightstream project, which aims to have deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) dominated “ultrafast broadband” network to a further 11,555 premises in Hull between now and the end of the year.

BT recently held another one of their periodic meetings with ISPs from across the United Kingdom, which among other things revealed the latest roll-out progress for G.fast and FTTP “ultrafast broadband” tech, as well as a trial of Qube engineer visits and the status of their 21CN upgrades.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today started a short “Flash Sale” of their standalone 50-300Mbps ultrafast cable broadband packages, which cuts a few extra pounds off the existing discounts and will be available to order by new customers until 11th October 2017.

The latest independent data to September 2017 has estimated that “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable fixed line networks now cover 93.9% of premises in the United Kingdom (96.6% if you include all “fibre based” lines of any speed inc. sub-24Mbps), with Wales and Scotland both touching completion.

Mobile operator giffgaff, which is based off O2 UK’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform, has increased the data allowances across their various 4G plans by between +250MB (MegaBytes) and +3GB (GigaBytes), depending upon which option you take.

Telecoms operator EE has signed a new deal that will see nPower supply the mobile giant with 680 GigaWatts of renewable electricity from green sources, such as wind farms and solar plants. The deal should also help BT to reach its target of purchasing 100% renewable electricity by 2020.

Consumers will soon benefit from more accurate information on what broadband line speeds they can expect from their ISP and what they can do if this isn’t delivered. The changes form part of a proposed update to Ofcom’s voluntary code of practice for residential speeds.

The fallout from AB Internet’s collapse in May 2017 continues to bite. A recent meeting revealed that 1,600 premises on the Isle of Mull (Scotland) will remain disconnected from superfast broadband because the 8 wireless mast that were built cannot be reused by the community due to state aid rules.

The Norfolk County Council (NCC) will next week debate the prospect of making a bid worth £13m to the UK Government’s new £200m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) programme, which could help to bring Gigabit class FTTP broadband services to public sector sites and businesses.

The internet access division of high street retailer John Lewis has discounted the price of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband and phone line rental bundle, which includes free UK evening and weekend landline calls, from £26.50 to £20 inc. VAT per month for the first 12 months of service.
