Ofcom’s annual study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds across the United Kingdom has revealed that the average Internet download rate is now 36.2Mbps (up from 28.9Mbps last year), with uploads hitting 4.3Mbps (up from 3.7Mbps). But there’s a widening gap between rural and urban areas.

Ofcom has today published a huge new report into the service quality and provision times of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs and technologies, which finds that 87% of broadband customers are satisfied with their service and this rises to 89% for landline (phone) and 92% for Mobile.

It’s been three months since BT introduced their free ‘Call Protect‘ service to tackle nuisance calls (here) and some 2 million homes across the United Kingdom are now using it. The broadband ISP has also published a table of the top 5 worst nuisance callers for March 2017.

None of the 17 initial pilot locations announced for BT’s pilot of 330Mbps capable G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) broadband technology has included anywhere in Northern Ireland, but all that changed today after they confirmed that 4,000 premises in Antrim would benefit.

The UK telecoms regulator has proposed to introduce a small but important change that would make it easier and cheaper for aircraft to support the use of on-board mobile devices (e.g. handsets, tablets, laptops) in the 2G, 3G and 4G radio spectrum bands.

On ISPreview.co.uk we’ve long made a point of highlighting post-contract / discount prices in our listings and we’ve frequently called for ISPs to make such details clearer. Today Citizens Advice has similarly warned that broadband prices can rise by an average 43% when fixed term deals end.

As most people known BT’s Consumer ISP division has long offered a range of broadband packages with capped usage allowances, at least it did until today as the options have been removed in order to avoid confusion. At the same time they’ve cut the price of their unlimited usage options.

Urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today reached yet another social housing agreement, which means that “thousands” of homes in Thurrock (Essex) will soon gain access to their ultrafast 1Gbps capable FTTP/B based broadband network. A special £9 a month 5Mbps option will also be offered.

UK Internet provider TalkTalk Business has today confirmed that they will be one of the first ISPs to adopt Openreach’s (BT) proposed ‘Dark Fibre Access‘ product, which follows a key ruling by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that will affect how the service is priced.

The MP for Warrington North (Cheshire, England), Helen Jones, has claimed that many residents in the area should be paid a total of £246,000 in compensation by ISPs because of the slow broadband speeds that local homes are alleged to endure. She wants Ofcom to take action.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their first 2017 reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet retain the top “Recommended Provider” award for their broadband service. At the other end TalkTalk attracted the lowest level of customer satisfaction.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that some 42,000 additional homes and businesses across Devon (England) will soon gain access to their ultrafast 300Mbps cable broadband and TV service, which forms part of the £3bn Project Lightning network expansion.

RootMetrics has today published the results from their latest study, which reveals the 4G (LTE) network coverage of the United Kingdom’s four primary mobile operators, across 14 of the biggest cities. Unsurprisingly EE does the best in 13 of the 14 metro areas tested.

A new study of 2,000 UK people by residential housing developer Redrow has claimed that the most important factor which goes toward creating a community is access to a local doctor’s surgery (99.5%), which was followed by “high-speed broadband” (98.1%).
