Asking politicians to stop arguing is a bit like telling the sky to rain during a drought, but a new report from the Scottish Affairs Committee (SAC) has told the UK and Scottish Government’s to end their “disharmony” and “intense political disagreement … about the rollout of broadband in Scotland.”

The UK government has today set out a range of new proposals (copper switch-off, regulatory reforms etc.) as part of their Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), which seeks to help boost investment and support for future 5G mobile and “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband. But there are caveats.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve joined Deutsche Glasfaser, Open Fiber, Reykjavikur and SIRO as signatories of a new alliance, which aims to promote a wholesale-only build model and end the misuse of “fibre” terminology in consumer broadband ISP advertising.

Mobile operator EE (BT) have put their new Rapid Response Vehicles (RRV) to the test with fire crews on Saddleworth Moor, which are intended to be used as a way to deploy 4G network coverage in remote areas under the government’s new £1.2bn Emergency Services Network (ESN).

Sky’s sibling ISP and video streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), has reduced the price of their 11Mbps “Brilliant Broadband” (ADSL), 36Mbps “Fat Fibre” and 63Mbps “Super Fibre” (FTTC / VDSL2) packages to just £15, £20 and £25 per month respectively on a 12 month contract.

The complicated four way acquisition battle between Disney, 21st Century Fox, Sky (Sky Broadband) and Comcast took an interesting turn yesterday after the latter dropped its own pursuit of Fox, which market analysts suggest will leave Disney to gobble Fox but open the door to a Comcast buy of Sky (i.e. Fox probably won’t bid again).

The Broadband Stakeholder Group think-tank, which advises the UK Government, has today published new research from Analysys Mason that identifies 13 specific barriers (reflecting practical challenges in planning and roll-out) to deployment of future 5G mobile infrastructure. Some 21 recommendations are made.

The fourth annual report from the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) Oversight Board has identified “shortcomings” in Huawei’s engineering processes, which they say have “exposed new risks in the UK telecommunication networks.” A number of operators, such as Openreach (BT), make use of kit from the Chinese firm.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that the completion of their joint Superfast Cymru contract with the Welsh Government has resulted in 733,000 extra premises across Wales being put within reach of faster broadband ISP speeds, which drops to 717,000 for those able to access “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+.

A new Hampshire-based residential ISP called Onestream has recently launched into the UK market and in order to promote that fact they’re offering some aggressively priced standard (ADSL2+) and superfast (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband packages, which naturally all include phone line rental.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their broadband ISP and TV customers will “soon” be able to keep track of exactly when their technicians (engineers) are due to arrive for an appointment, which will be done via real-time updates on their smartphone, tablet or computer.

UK ISP Connexin, which runs superfast broadband networks in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), claims to have launched the UK’s “largest” commercial “carrier-grade” citywide Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) in the city of Hull. Smart bins for all.

Openreach is in Cardiff today to talk-up the progress of their “Fibre First” project, which among other things confirmed that over the past few months they’ve added 100K premises to their UK coverage of “full fibre” FTTP broadband (total of 600,000+ premises passed).

Mobile operator EE has today launched a new range of 4G based Mobile Broadband plans and devices, which includes their 4GEE WiFi router that supports the latest Category 12 (3GPP Release 11) LTE specification for top download speeds of up to 600Mbps and uploads of up to 100Mbps (capacity and network allowing).

Ofcom has just published their latest Q1 2018 UK consumer complaints study, which notes that Sky Broadband attracted the least gripes for fixed line broadband and phone services, while TalkTalk attracted the most complaints for both. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.
